5 Hair Care Tips Every Woman Should Know for the New Year

It’s a new year and you want a new look, so that you can start working towards a new you. Besides, who doesn’t love beauty tips? From growing out your hair, to selecting the perfect bangs for your face, we’ve got beauty tips galore to keep you feeling gorgeous all year long.

1. Growing Out the Pixie Cut—ASAP

You’ve done it, I’ve done it, she’s done it—we’ve all cut our hair short and then instantly wanted our long hair back. Heck, I even bought extensions to ease the loss of my long hair. But there are ways to grow your lovely long tresses back in no time, such as adjusting your diet. Eat a healthy, balanced diet that incorporates a mixture of protein and nutrients. Also, add in omega-3 oils, like salmon and nuts. Be sure you also limit the amount of heat you expose to your hair, like straightening and blow drying.

2. The Right Way to Wash Your Hair

Gasp, there’s a right way to wash your hair? Absolutely! Here’s the secret:

  • You should always start out washing your hair by rinsing it first with warm water. Warm water helps open the cuticles to release trapped dirt and get it ready to absorb much-need oils.
  • For all you long haired beauties out there, make sure you condition first. Yes, really! This helps keep your hair smooth and shiny.
  • Then next up, lather up only at the scalp. Not all of your hair needs shampooing, you only need to shampoo it at the scalp and the nape. And you only need about a quarter-sized dab of shampoo, anyways.
  • Once you’re done washing, add conditioner from the mid-lengths to the tips, only. I keep conditioner on my hair for about five minutes so my hair can better absorb the moisturizing nutrients.

Remember to be gentle, don’t rinse and repeat, and finish off with cold water to seal in the moisture.

3. Dyeing Hair Dark

After watching the new Star Wars movie, you’re thinking about coming over to the dark side. Well before you make the leap, there are a few challenges to be aware of:

  • Consider your brows: If you are going from natural blonde to black for instance, you’ll need to either dye your eyebrows or fill them in. And please, leave the brow-dyeing to the professionals.
  • Mixture of colors: Just like going blonde, to go dark there is a mixture of colors that goes into the look.
  • Going light again is tough: Say you gave going dark a try, well my friend, to go back light is going to be a long process. It’s difficult (trust me, I’m a brunette that went blonde) to go back light again. So don’t rush into this decision.

4. Looks That Make You Appear Older

Heaven forbid, yes there are looks that make you appear older. From blunt bangs, to perfectly straight hair, we suggest avoiding some of these if you want to be 21 forever.

  • Blunt, heavy bangs: Too-heavy of hair at the front of your face makes you facial features appear smaller. Try to feather out your hair so that you can show off your pretty, youthful face!
  • Beware the frizz: If your hair tends to curl or frizz, it can cause your appearance to look disheveled, therefore aging you. Frizz ease products are out there, and they’re great to use.
  • Too straight: When your hair is too straightened, it can appear harsh. Add some waves to soften your features.

5. Prevent the Split

So you’re growing your hair out—but just so you know, you won’t get very far if split ends are present. To prevent split ends from happening, you only need to make a few simple changes.

  • Change the way you wash: We already talked about how to correctly wash your hair, but this is an important part to keep your hair healthy and free of split-ends.
  • Brush gently: Never be too harsh when brushing your hair. We suggest limiting how much you brush your hair when it’s wet, this can lead to breakage.
  • Style your hair less: You don’t want to overdo it with the curling iron, straightener, or hair dryer, as as these are the main culprits of split ends. So on days you aren’t planning to hit the town, give your hair a style break. It helps!
Before the new year even starts, give these hair care tips a try! You’ll be surprised how just a simple change in your routine can make a world of difference in the health of your hair. Besides, shouldn’t your new year’s resolution be something you actually enjoy doing? Let us know how these tips work for you in the comment section below! And while you’re at giving yourself a new look this year, give your Mary Kay business one too. Join UnitWise and give your business a freshening up; you’ll be glad you did!

“Mary” Christmas: 7 Festive Makeup Looks for the Season

“Mary” Christmas, everybody!

The lights are twinkling, stars are shining, and your makeup is radiantly glowing. That is, if you follow these 10 makeup looks we put together for the holiday season. It doesn’t matter if you’re going to a party, a get-together, or just hosting Christmas dinner at your house—these looks will have you shimmering. Speaking of shimmer, here’s our first tip!

1. Use Shimmer

From the lights to the tinsel, Christmas is all about glowing and shining bright, which is why you should use shimmer. Known as highlighting makeup, shimmer helps bring a sweep of color to your face, and catches people’s eyes every time you move. We suggest using shimmer on your cheekbones, below your brow bone, and on the inner corner of your eyes. Word to the wise, choose the right type of highlighting for your skin tone: fair beauties should use pink-based tones and dark-skinned beauties should use golden tones.

2. Blushing with Happiness

Blush is mandatory for your festive Christmas look! Just like jolly ole Saint Nicholas, you want to amp up the rosiness in your cheeks. Our suggestion to create the perfect blush look is to use a lighter blush first and then apply a darker shade over it. And then you’re ready to go, beautiful lady!

3. Line Those Dynamic Eyes

Be bold this Christmas, apply eyeliner in a sweeping, cat eye fashion. I know the cat-eye look has been around for a little bit now, but it’s the best way to give your holiday appearance the elegant statement that ties your whole look together. Our suggestion to get the perfect line is to swap the pencil for the liquid. Close your eye, start from the inner corner, and move the line outward. You can even add a wing at the end. And to make sure that elegant line really pops, keep your eyeshadow to a soft pink.

4. Luscious Lips

Nothing pulls a look together quite like lipstick. Of course, we don’t need to tell you what shade looks the loveliest on you, but we do suggest that you add a touch of shimmer to it. Try adding a clear lipgloss on top to make the color pop.

5.  Be Brow, Be Beautiful

So this is the one area of makeup I always forget to include. Brows are a magical little feature that can help frame our face and give it a lift. To properly make over your brows, first groom them (cutting them shorter, if necessary). Then pick up an eyebrow pencil that will match your natural eyebrow color. Carefully shade in any bare spots to create a beautiful look.

6. Switch Up Your Hair Part

Are you like me and always wear your hair parted in the same place on a daily basis? Well this Christmas season, part it differently. Of course, your hair naturally prefers to lay a certain way, but you can always make the part deeper or smaller on one side. I part my hair to the left, but when I want to change up the look for a party, for example, I part my hair to the left an inch more. It’s an easy change, but it gives your hair a dramatic look.

7. Get Frenchie and Do Your Nails

I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the season than with perfectly manicured nails! Go out and pamper yourself with a French manicure. It will dress up any outfit and leave you feeling confident for any occasion.

I hope you find these holiday tips festive enough for whatever you have planned for Christmas! And if you haven’t heard, the UnitWise Heroes will be out of the office to celebrate the Christmas season with our families. We will return on Monday, December 28th. However, if you need any emergency support for your UnitWise account please don’t hesitate to send us an email at heroes@unitwise.com. The 5 Best Ways to Earn That Pink Cadillac

Congratulations, Rhona George of Framingham on your new Mary Kay pink Cadillac! You have joined the ranks and earned one of Mary Kay’s greatest accomplishments.

Since 1969, the Mary Kay Company has gifted their top selling Independent Beauty Consultants, Directors, and NSDs a career car. And although, Mary Kay Ash originally wanted a Lincoln back in 1967, the tradition of giving the most accomplished Mary Kay consultant a Mountain Laurel Sedan de Ville has happened for 46 years now.

Today, more than 6,032 Mary Kay career cars are on the road, with 1,318 being Mary Kay pink Cadillacs. So again, congratulations Rhona on an amazing accomplishment.

If you haven’t had the chance to earn yourself a career car from Mary Kay, don’t give up! The UnitWise Heroes are here with five ways to help you get into that pink Cadillac.

1. Build a Strong Team.

To get into that dream pink cadi, you’ve got to have a solid and motivated team behind you. And the only way to build a successful team is with great leadership.

To be a great leader, you’ve got to:

  • Be aware of your leadership style: Evaluate yourself and improve your leadership skills. Ask yourself, “are my styles effective?”, “is my team responding to my leadership style?”, “is my leadership helping my Unit to grow and succeed?”
  • Know the rest of your team: A good leader is someone who takes the time to get to know their Unit members and gives them encouraging advice. Care for your Unit and treat them as individuals, rather than money makers. Evaluate what each member of your Unit brings to the table, their strengths, weakness, and capabilities.
  • Acknowledge and reward good work: Although people love to be recognized, what’s most important to them is respect. Be genuine in recognizing someone’s accomplishments. When they feel you respect them and what they bring to the group, extra effort always organically follows.
2. Always Training. Always Improving.

We can always improve and do better than we did the day before. Just because we’ve worked in the business for twenty years, doesn’t mean there isn’t room for us to improve. If you wish to reach the pink Cadillac level of success, you have to admit to yourself that everyday's a new opportunity to get better and do better, which is why training is so important.

Holding training sessions with your Unit can help take your business success to new heights. Whether it’s sending out flyers and promotions, team building, building better networks, or hosting parties, there are countless ways to improve—you just have to start looking!

3. Be There and Willing to Help.

Earning a pink Cadillac takes more than just you—it’s a team effort. This advice echos that of which we just gave, reminding you to build a strong team through your leadership skills and training. But you have to be there and involved with your team for them to be successful. Take the time to reward and celebrate successes, as well as work on areas that need improvement. Your Unit can’t improve if you aren’t there to help them. So be the leader that’s always there, willing to lend a helping hand when it’s needed.

4. Be Passionate.

When you are passionate about what you do and what you want, success comes natural. You have to have passion for the business you are in, for that passion extends to your Unit members. You’ve got to be the one that lights the fire in your Unit and motivates them every day to do their very best. When they see the passion in you, they’ll be inspired to do more. Every great leader in history has passion, for without it no one wants to join the vision. So, be passionate, get motivated, and share your vision with your Unit, today.

5. Communicate. Talk. Communicate. Talk.

Mary Kay Ash had a way to motivate people to believe in themselves, their ability, and their dreams. At UnitWise, we live by her words as our daily inspiration to do more than we did the day before. What Mary Kay Ash did so amazingly well was communicate with her company. She inspired you to want to do more and be more than what you were yesterday.

One of the surest ways to get into that pink Cadillac is to inspire your Unit members through your actions and words. But you must also listen. To be an effective communicator, you must know what to say, but you also when you need to listen. If one of your Unit members is struggling with promoting a product, listen to their needs and find ways to help them. Stay in communication with your Unit members, after all, you’re all working together to achieve success.

Like Mary Kay Ash once said, there’s no magic formula for success. And in this case, there isn’t one for achieving a pink Cadillac. It all comes down to how hard you work, how passionate you are, and how effective you are in your leadership. But remember, you’re never alone. Mary Kay is a team and you all depend on each other for success and motivation. And you also have UnitWise. We’re here to help you achieve all of your dreams, whatever they might be. So until next time, good luck and work hard for that pink Cadillac!

9 Ways to Keep Your Healthy Glow all Winter Long

Winter is in the air, well starting Tuesday that is, but you better start now on protecting your skin! When it comes to cold air and low humidity, the air becomes greedy and tries to steal all the moisture away from your skin every second of the day. I know, sounds pretty threatening! And did I mention that the health of your hair is at stake too? Yep, you have to protect both your hair and skin from the harsh winter winds. So, here are nine ways to help you keep a healthy glow all winter long. After you give these tips a try, let me know the results!

1. Use Lukewarm Water

Since Star Wars just came out I have a joke to start out this tip: What is the temperature inside a tauntaun? Lukewarm!

OK, maybe that didn’t make you laugh as much as I thought it would, but my suggestion to help keep you skin looking healthy and bright this season is to avoid the hot showers and wash your face in lukewarm water. Lukewarm water doesn’t strip away as much oil from your skin as hot water does, working wonder for the health and appearance of your skin.

2. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

A habit that I recently started is moisturizing my face right after I wash it. During the winter, your skin needs moisture all the time, and especially right after the shower. When you moisturize damp skin it helps seal in the dampness, giving you amazing results all day long.

3. Be Selective with Your Moisturizer

Avoid, avoid, avoid petroleum-based moisturizers! These moisturizers can actually dry your skin out more. But of course we don’t need to tell you much about selecting the right moisturizer, Mary Kay has excellent products to choose from. My suggestion, though, is to select a creamier moisturizer.

4. Exfoliate Your Skin

Your skin, as lovely as this is about to sound, has to shed its dead cells. When you have an excess of dead cells, it won’t matter how much moisturizing you’re doing. The dead cells are blocking the moisture from reaching your healthy skin. And I know, it’s easy to forget with all the washing and moisturizing, but you have to exfoliate your skin. An exfoliating body wash or a mask are great ways to give your skin the immediate moisture and smoothness it so desperately needs.

5. Drink Plenty of Water

Think of your favorite wintertime drink. It’s probably a cup of cocoa, tea, or coffee, right? We tend to drink more warm beverages during the winter, but because of that you’re probably not drinking a lot of water. So to compromise with your hot beverage cravings and need for water; try warming your water up and adding a flavor to it like lemon.

6. Layer up

When it comes to both your hair and your skin, the best way to keep the healthy glow is to protect it. So, bundle up! I wear a hat a lot of the times to protect my hair from the rain, snow, and the wind. But I know some of you are thinking, “what about the hat hair?” There is a way around the dreaded hat hair; you could use a scarf or go for a slouchy beanie. Whatever you decide to do, it’s a great way to save your hair this winter. Also, wearing a scarf close to your face can help protect your skin from drying out due to the harsh temperature and wind.

7. Buy a Humidifier

This little tip is great for both your skin and hair, and everything else in your house! A humidifier puts moisture back into the air, helping you keep that glowing, vibrant look. Buy a humidifier and say goodbye to dry skin and static-riddled hair!

8. Deep Conditioning Treatments

Your ends need all the support they can get this winter season, which is why a deep conditioning treatment is so important. A deep conditioning will help seal in the ends and protect them from the threatening winter winds.

9. Keep it Trimmed

OK, so you’re trying to grow your hair out for summer; I get it. But healthy and beautiful hair has to have a few good trims throughout the winter months. Your hair will break and actually get shorter if you do not trim it. No one wants split ends making their way up your hair, now do they?

Keeping your healthy glow this winter isn’t hard to do! Just remember that moisture is your biggest friend this season, so keep it handy and apply often. For more tips and tricks, stay tuned to UnitWise. And if you haven’t already, be sure to give the gift of UnitWise to your director and NSD friends! For every four eligible referrals you’ll get a month for free.

Mary Kay Ash: Overcoming Obstacles

Provide an open-ended opportunity for women!
-The Mary Kay Way

Mary Kay Ash is an inspiration, a legacy, and a visionary! Raised in a time when a few women were in business for themselves, Mary Kay Ash broke down barriers in the male-dominated-work world. She wanted a career where she could make a good income, have a flexible schedule, and give her children the care they needed. Building a career is hard, building a legacy is harder, and being able to do it when the world turns against you might be the hardest—but Mary Kay Ash did it all.

Mary Kay Ash experienced first hand the discrimination and unfair treatment plaguing women in the business world. From being denied promotions, to being told she was thinking too much “like a woman,” Mary Kay retired from the direct selling company she worked at to start something new.

Committing her life savings of about $5,000, she created a marketing plan for a skin care line she had used since the early 1950s. Sadly, tragedy struck her family with the death of her husband one month before the launch of the venture. But with perseverance, determination, and a lot of love, Mary Kay’s company succeeded and passed the $1 million sales mark in just a matter of three years.

Over the course of her lifetime, Mary Kay Ash has inspired other women with her business know-how, dedication, and her spirit. And as we all know to be true, the Mary Kay Company really does make dreams come true. We decided to listen once again to Mary Kay Ash’s words of wisdom to learn how we can better ourselves in our daily lives and our Mary Kay business.

Breakdown the Barrier (1).jpg

Mary Kay always believed the only way to truly succeed is to plan. In life and in business, you have to know where you are going and how you plan to get there.

When you get.jpg

Persistence is everything! Being in business and being successful takes time, determination, and a whole lot of persistence. Mary Kay explains that successful directors are just ordinary people who have the extraordinary determination and meet their goals.

-God feeds the birds.jpg

The Mary Kay Company gives you the tools to succeed, but nothing works unless you do! The key to being successful in your business is to be patient, put in some effort, and do work. You can ask for help and receive guidance but without hard work and determination—you’ll never achieve it.

Everyone has an.jpg

One of the fundamental lessons to always remember is to treat people like people, and to show passion for everything you do. Mary Kay Ash told us to imagine people with signs around their neck asking us to make them feel important. And it’s true! The more passion you share and the more you make someone feel special, the better you’ll do in your Mary Kay endeavors.

-Most people live and die with their.jpg

One of our biggest fears in life is failure. We’re so scared of taking a chance and risking it all, that we miss out on some of life’s greatest adventures. You can never be afraid to try, because you might discover you have so much to give. Let others hear the beauty of your music and be inspired by your song. Never let your music go unplayed.

As Mary Kay Ash would say, “God didn’t have time to make a nobody. You are a somebody.” Go out there, treat others with respect, be happy, show passion, and let others be inspired by the influence that is you. The secret to success cannot be found in a magical formula; it’s what you do that really matters. Here at UnitWise, we live by Mary Kay Ash’s words of wisdom, every day. Therefore, we want to continue to show our passion for such a wonderful company by making UnitWise a better product for Independent Beauty Consultants, Directors, and NSD’s. Our passion, our plan, and our motivation is to help you. Here’s to Mary Kay Ash, here’s to you!

10 Must-Know Beauty Hacks to Help You Survive Finals Week

It doesn’t take a dermatologist to know that final exams, coupled with junk food, and stressful, sleepless nights, lead to unhappy skin and messy hair. I remember the good ole days of rolling out of bed after a late night study session, grabbing my favorite college sweatshirt, and running to catch the bus to get to my exam on time.

Skin care, hairstyles, who? During finals week, I was lucky if I grabbed breakfast. But I paid for it too; I’m talking dark circles, stress acne, and really, I mean really, dehydrated skin, coupled with a messy hairdo filled with knots and kinks. But although my mind was working overtime to remember facts about the Franco-Prussian War, there were simple nightly remedies I could’ve used to help my skin and hair too. So instead of suffering all week long, here are 10 must-know beauty hacks to help you survive your finals week.

Skincare/Makeup

1. Kick the Dead Skin Out

It’s time you exfoliate your skin! Yes, it’s time. Right now. Do it! Exfoliating your skin is one of the surest ways you can make your skin look tight, bright, and beautiful after a long night of studying. I recommend the Skinvigorate Cleansing Brush from Mary Kay! This little brush is the perfect tool to help you remove all of your makeup, buff away any dry skin patches, and soften the appearance of lines and wrinkles. And I love the purple and green color that it comes in!  But be sure to only use this brush two to three times during the week—perfect for exams, right? You don’t ever want to over-exfoliate your skin, since it can remove a good amount of natural oils from your face.

2. Relax and Do a Face Mask

Nothing feels as good as when you get to either rinse off or peel off a face mask designed to give you clean, smoother looking skin. Am I right? I prefer to use the Mary Kay Botanical Effects Mask (I use the formula 1 to help with dry skin). This facial mask works well to help improve the look and feel of my skin. Since my skin does have dry qualities, this mask helps to replenish lost nutrients and hydrate my face. Try this mask; you’ll be amazed at how little you have to do to get amazing results.

3. Wilting Flower

Who can blame you? It’s been a long day full of studying and test taking, and your skin is starting to show the effects. Well brighten up, sunshine! All it takes to pep yourself back up, mentally and physically, is a light jog, stretch, water break, or a spritz of facial spray. Again, I’m returning back to the Botanical Effects collection, this time it’s the Freshen spray. It works wonders, pulling extra residue and moisture from your skin that has settled after a long day. The spray also helps to leave your skin looking cleaner and healthier. Be sure to pick the formula level that’s right for your skin type, though!

4. Concealer

Exams=acne, dark circles, shine, etc! Although exams wreak all of this havoc, there’s no time to go all out with the fake eyelashes and what not. You can still look amazing with just a few simple tricks using concealer. Add concealer to problem areas and places with a lot of shine. It can help you appear to look more alert and refreshed.

5. Loving Lashes

So yeah, there’s not much time in the morning before your big exam to attach lashes, but you can still get that great eye look with a lash curler and a coat of mascara. All you’ll need to do is curl your lashes and add the mascara—and boom, done! You won’t have to bother with eye shadow or liner, and you’ll reduce the risk of smudging your makeup when you rub your stressed eyes during the exam.

6. Perfume

OK, hopefully you won’t be too stressed or late for your exam that you’ll have to skip the shower, but if you do we have you covered. Perfume is the next best thing to showering when you’re in a hurry. Just spritz a few sprays on your neck and shoulder, and then again on each wrist. Pick a perfume that has lavender or a calming fragrance. I recommend spraying it on your wrist so that the smell can calm you down during the exam.

Hairstyles

7. The Elegant Ponytail

So of course, every girls go-to hairstyle during exam week is the ponytail. But why do what everyone else is doing? Fancy your ponytail up this week by copying Blake Lively’s favorite hairstyle on Gossip Girl. All you have to do is brush your hair back and put it into a ponytail. Grab a small portion of hair that’s underneath the ponytail and wrap it around the hair tie and fix it with a bobby pin. And there you go, one extraordinarily easy ponytail but one amazingly glamorous look.

8. Side Braid Ponytail

You can thank Elsa from Frozen and Katniss from the Hunger Games on this hairstyle! Known for their bravery, sass, and tough girl attitude, these ladies’ hairstyle is the one to copy so that you can kick butt in your exams. Now this hairstyle might take you a few times to master perfectly, but trust me, it’s worth it! Start with a small french braid at the side of your hair (think behind your ear). You’ll make this braid as you would a regular french braid by collecting more hair as you make your way across to the other side of your head. Once you reach your other ear, secure the braid with a hair tie.

9. Head Wrap Ponytail

Are you sensing a theme here? We love ponytails, because let’s face it, they’re the quickest way to do your hair when you’re in a hurry. For this hairdo, trust me when I say it takes less than a minute to do. All you’ll need to do is pull your hair up in a messy ponytail, wrap a ribbon around your head, and tie a bow. Done! Pull out a few strands to really capture that messy look.

10. Dry Shampoo

Maybe you didn’t have time to give your hair a good washing the night before your exam. Well don’t worry, we have a solution: dry shampoo! I’m a big fan of dry shampoo. When I’m in a hurry and don’t have time to do much to my hair, I spray dry shampoo to give it a fresh and clean look. It works every time! And if you’re on a budget, instead of purchasing dry shampoo you could always use baby powder. Just be sure to really brush it through your hair so you don’t look like you’re going gray.

From all of the Heroes here at UnitWise, we hope you have a great exam week and that you look and feel your very best! For more interesting beauty hacks, be sure to follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook.
