Finding the Perfect Perfume For You

Ah perfume! The glorious spray you spritz yourself with after you’ve done your hair, put on your makeup, and picked out the right outfit. But it has us wondering, is there a right type of perfume for your body type, just like there’s a right type of foundation for your skintone? Well, we’re on a mission to find out!

The Terminology

Who would have thought that perfume could be so complicated? Just take a look at the terminology for example! There are about five different types of perfume terminology you’ll need to know before selecting the perfect scent for you. We put it in a nice list from the least expensive to the most.
  • Eau de Cologne: This is a three to five percent oil in a mixture of alcohol and water. It’s a lighter type of perfume.
  • Eau de Toilette: Contains about four to eight percent perfume oil and it is mixed in alcohol instead of water.
  • Eau de Parfum: Holds a higher percentage of perfume oil which is between 15 to 18 percent, and it’s mixed with alcohol.
  • Perfume:  As the top perfume, before you hit your absolutes, this mixture is about 15 to 30 percent oil and it’s mixed with alcohol.
  • Absolutes: Just as their name suggests, absolutes are pure and natural extracts from a flower/vegetable. It comes in a very small dose and it tends to be extremely expensive.
Meet the Family

So if you weren’t caught off guard with the terminology of the perfume section, wait until you meet the family! Yep, in the perfume world there are four different types of fragrances: floral, citrus, oriental, and woody. Knowing which family you’ll want your scent to fall into can help you narrow down your perfume selection.

So Many Choices—How Do You Decide?

Choosing the right perfume can seem overwhelming, especially when you’re sampling smells and they’re all starting to smell the same. So here’s what we suggest doing:

  1. Spray the perfume on a card, smell it and then wait five to ten minutes before smelling it again. This will give the perfume time to settle and exhibit it’s true scent.
  2. Know your skin type is also important when selecting the type of perfume. If you have drier skin, the scent won’t last as long. So you’ll want to pick a perfume that’s higher in oil percentage, such as a Eau de Parfum or Perfume.
  3. Shop for your perfume later in the day. Our sense of smell is keener during the evening, and in warmer weather. When you shop during these times, you’ll get the best smell of each perfume.

You Found One, Now What?

So you finally found the perfect scent that you know fits you perfectly, but there’s more you have to do! Oh yes, to really capture the truest scent, there are additional steps you can do:
  1. Update all of your other toiletries, such as your bodywash, lotions, even your deodorant to either unscented or a scent that only complements, not overshadows.
  2. Spritz perfume only on your pulse points: the center of your neck, behind the ear, your wrist, and behind the knee (we know, it’s weird). If you want a lighter scent, spritz perfume in the air and then walk through it. We also suggest you avoid spraying perfume on your clothes and just apply it on your bare skin— some perfumes can stain clothes. Just don’t overdo the spritzing.
  3. To make the scent of perfume last throughout the entire day, spritz yourself with some right after you shower. Your pores are open, helping perfume to be absorbed more.

7 Ways to Encourage, Lead, and Inspire Your Unit

We’ve all heard it before! “You’re only as good as your team members.” Because, as a leader, it’s your job to keep your team motivated and encouraged to make those sales.

Being a leader of your Unit requires a lot of work, a good amount of attention to detail, and dedication to your team. And, it’s not always as easy as it seems, which is why we put together a list of seven ways to help encourage, lead, and inspire your Unit.

1. Quit Micromanaging

You got to where you are because of your hard work and dedication. You have a preferred way of making sales, talking with potential customers, and organizing your business. That doesn’t mean the way that your Unit members handle their Mary Kay business is wrong. It’s important to give your Unit members instructions, but it’s equally important to step back and let them do the job. You don’t need to stand over their shoulder, no need to micromanage.

2. Be Yourself. Be Personable

Gaining the position of Director or NSD has already garnered the respect of many. You don’t have to come across as the tough leader to your Unit members to get them to sell more products. Nor do you have to act more strict to establish your role in the Unit. Let your Unit members know they can come to you at any time if they have problems or concerns. Your role should be their guide, offering suggestions when needed.

3. Show All the Right Emotions

You work for one of the most energetic companies out there, and it’s important that you stress that mentality to your Unit members. And the best way to do that is by replicating that yourself! Show emotions, be happy, get excited, smile, laugh, and have fun with your Unit. When they see you enjoying what you do, they’ll feel the same.

4. Ask Questions

Seems strange to suggest that you ask your Unit members questions to keep them motivated, but how will you ever know what someone is struggling with, if they’re happy, etc. if you don’t ask, right? When you ask questions you’re letting your team see that you are here for their best interest, and that their happiness is important to you, giving them the confidence to work harder.

5. Help with Growth

We all have different strategies when it comes to talking to potential customers, to talk about the products, and to make the sale. Embrace the difference in each of your Unit members, but be there with suggestions to always help them grow. You don’t need to point out when one of your Unit members doesn’t handle a sale correctly. Simply explain to them what they need to improve on and offer advice. Remind them that you are here to help them succeed.

6. Involvement

The world and people’s wants change every single day, making it a challenge to keep up with sales trends. But that doesn’t mean the weight of knowing the best strategies falls only on your shoulders. You have an entire Unit of people who can give you fresh ideas on how to change up sales tactics. So get them involved and have regular brainstorming sessions to always have new ideas, but also to keep your team feeling encouraged.

7. Be There

One of the biggest ways to keep your Unit members encouraged and inspired is to be there for them. When they need help, when they need suggestions, or when they need questions answered, be the one that is there to help. To keep your Unit members inspired to work hard every day, you have to be available for them to lean on when they need it. And one of the best ways you can do that is with the new MyUnitBuzz app from UnitWise. With this free app, you can send customizable messages and push notifications to your Unit members’ smartphone. Always keeping them informed, encouraged, and connected with you.

Keep up the great work Directors and NSDs, you’re doing an amazing job with an amazing group of people. It doesn’t take much to stay motivated and confident; just a little encouragement is all that’s needed.

Do you have any tips on keeping your Unit members encouraged, motivated, and inspired? If so, let us know in the comment section below or share it with us on our Facebook page. Avoid These Classic Home Office Decorating Mistakes

We’ve all done it. We’ve bought a chair that’s horribly uncomfortable, or a rug that’s just too rough, or a lamp that makes a soft humming sound when it’s on. You know, the classic decorating mistakes we’ve made when it comes to our home office.

So whether it’s buying an inventory shelf that’s too tall for the room or a piece of furniture with barely any storage space, here are a few decorating mistakes you’ll want to watch out for when it comes to decorating your home office. We like to avoid calamities!

Classic Mistake #1: Decoration Explosion

Yes, it’s absolutely possible to have a decoration explosion, where you simply have too much stuff on your desk, your shelves, and your walls. Although you want to decorate with everything you have, it can make your office look cluttered, causing quite a bit of distraction too.

Our Solution: You’ll want to go with a minimalistic approach when decorating your office. Instead of putting family pictures in standup frames, you can purchase matching frames and have them hanging on your wall. When it comes to smaller decorations, try to make them as inconspicuous as possible on your desk.

Classic Mistake #2: Uncomfortable Furniture

So, you found the perfect chairs for your office, and one for behind your desk. They’re chic and match your other decor perfectly, but they’re uncomfortable. Well my friend, why spend your time sitting on a chair that makes you miserable? Although it might complete the room, if you purchase an uncomfortable chair you won't spend any time in that decorated office of yours.

Our Solution: Slow down and take your time picking out a chair that is both comfortable and chic. There are plenty of them out there, just takes some time to find them and wait for them to go on sale. Trust us, waiting a few days is better than sitting in uncomfortable chairs.

Classic Mistake #3: Cords Galore

You’ve meticulously decorated, and everything has its place, except the cords. Cords are frustrating, they’re a big necessity in your office, but they’re not the cutest look.

Our Solution: Before you do any decorating, hide the cords. If you don’t take care of these nuisances first, you’ll never get around to doing it. Try bunching the cords together with zip ties and run them down one of the legs of your desk.

Classic Mistake #4: Different Size Furniture

Nothing detracts from the look of your office then different sized furniture. For example, you have a tiny desk, next to a giant wardrobe, next to a wall-to-wall inventory shelf. Feeling a little like it’s just a hodge-podge of furniture placed in a room together, right?

Our Solution: When it comes to decorating your home office, try buying your furniture in a set or attempt to keep the same theme throughout your entire room. Although it’s easy to purchase a desk first and then wait to buy other furniture pieces at random times, it is difficult to tell if the furniture pieces you’re purchasing are going to compliment each other.

Classic Mistake #5: Poor Lighting

No matter where you’re working, you need to have adequate lighting. Many people fail to think about purchasing a lamp because they feel like overhead fluorescents will be good enough. Wrong!

Our Solution: Find a desk lamp that will compliment the theme of your office. You’ll want to go with a desk lamp so that you can have enough lighting where you’re working. You might also want to think about the placement of your desk near a window. Natural lighting is the best for your eyes.

Classic Mistake #6: No Storage

When it comes to a home office, the more storage space you have, the better. But purchasing furniture pieces without available storage space can be a real problem. You’ll have to resort to buying more furniture or storage shelves to accommodate all of your products.

Our Solution: Most furniture for offices comes with hidden compartments and storage areas. It gives your office a great chic, minimalistic look, with plenty of room for all of your Mary Kay inventory.

Fool-Proof Ways to Sell Better Than You Did Last Year

It’s the start of the new year, meaning there are new goals to set, accomplishments to have, and sales records to beat. Do you and your Unit have a game plan ready for how you’re going to tackle this year and make it the best one yet? Well if you haven’t, don’t panic. We’re here with a few fool-proof ways to help you sell more products than you did last year. Intrigued to learn more? Keep reading!

Give Value

Have you ever heard the expression, “she can sell snow to a snowman”? It’s a saying used to compliment someone’s selling skills. But when you think about the phrase, is it really a compliment? It reflects this stereotypical portrayal of salespeople as sneaky and selling valueless (unwanted) products.

Luckily for you, though, you sell products for a company that strives for high-quality and the best value. Mary Kay offers industry-leading makeup products, and skincare solutions that help women (and men) feel better about themselves every day. So when it comes to increasing your sales, don’t try to push every type of product on a customer. Find the one that is of value to them, because in the end, it’s the value of the products that will have customers wanting to buy from you again and again.

Offer the Solution

When it comes to makeup and skincare, not all products are created the same. They do not offer the same coverage or help correct the same problem areas. But not all of your customers are aware of this, leaving you with the task of convincing them why your product is worth the price. So how do you do it?

Offer your customers the solution! For example, say your customer is searching for a product that will help cover all of the redness in her skin. Offer her the product that is designed to specifically cover redness. And while you’re at it, tell her how this product is different than any other product of this nature on the market. Challenge your customer’s perception about makeup being created the same. Show her why Mary Kay is worth it (every single time).

Always Be Honest

Although we just advised you to offer your customers the solution, be sure to remain honest. Mary Kay offers fantastic products that are designed and tested to give your customers proven results, so why enhance any of the product’s quality?

Be honest with your customers. If you don’t know the answers to their questions, let them know you aren’t quite sure and that you’ll find the answer for them. It’s OK to admit you don’t know, or that a product doesn’t do something. People are more inclined to still purchase products from you when you’re honest, even though there might be shortcomings.

Pay Attention

You’ve heard of reading people’s body language, right? Well, it’s one of those few traits you need to have when in the business of selling products. Why, you ask? There are several different types of people in the world, all with different personalities and social interactions. How you sell a product to one person might be entirely different from the other. Pay attention to your customer’s actions and teach your Unit a variety of selling techniques and approaches that are geared to different types of people: introverts and extroverts.

Don’t Show Desperation

So you really want this sell, but you’re just not having any luck. The customer is mostly browsing and asking a couple of questions, but showing no signs of making a purchase. Pretty frustrating, right? Well, if you’re getting frustrated therein lies the problem. You’re seeing customers as dollar signs rather than people you’re here to help. The makeup and skincare products you’re selling are to help improve people's lives, make them happier, and help them feel confident, not just for making a profit.

Switch the thinking, and show your customers that you’re here to help them, not the other way around. Don’t get desperate and try to force products on your customers. Show them what will help them the most, and I promise, not only will you make the sell, but you’ll also have a repeat customer.

So are you ready to go out there and make this your best selling year yet? We can’t wait! And remember, while you’re making all of those sales, keep up with all of your expenses with UnitWise. It’s the business management solution designed exclusively for Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultants, Directors, and NSDs. And it’s free for the first 15 days!

Brighten up Your Eyes for Leadership Week

Happy Leadership Week!

As you’re working your way through this exciting week, are you learning new tips, meeting fellow consultants, and celebrating everyone’s accomplishments, all while losing a little bit of sleep? We thought so! And although we might not be able to help you in the sleep department, we can offer some makeup tips to brighten up your tired, leadership-week eyes.

Tip #1 - Concealer

Concealer is the magic elixir in a bottle, smoothing out our faces and giving us a nice even skin tone—perfect solution when morning comes too early. To start out your bright eye look, give your face a nice once-over with some concealer, concentrating on the area under your eyes to help reduce the look of dark circles.

Tip #2 - Highlight

After you’ve evened out your skintone, it’s time to apply some color back to your face. A highlighting powder helps accent your lovely cheekbones, catches the lights, and draws attention to your eyes. Use highlighting powder very lightly, with a fluffier blush as compared to a powder or blush brush. Using a fluffy brush helps to create a softer, more even highlighting look.

Tip #3 - Blush

Blushing a little bit is important! Blush works wonders to sculpt and bring life to your face, as well as brighten your eyes. Start from the apples of your cheeks and sweep it towards your hairline. Whenever my eyes need a little extra boost of sparkle, I usually pick blushes that are slightly brighter in color, such as corals and pinks.

Tip #4 - Colored Eye Pencils

If you only had time to apply one beauty product in the morning, would you reach for eyeliner? Eyeliner is a wonderful little product that can really help brighten your eyes up. But why stick with the traditional brown or black color? Mix it up! Find a playful color that will give a pop to those eyes of yours. Blues, whites, purples, etc., are great colors to choose from and will definitely catch people’s attention.

Tip #5 - Curl Your Lashes

Curling your lashes and then applying mascara is the perfect combination to brighten up your tired eyes. Eyelash curlers help to lift your lashes up and bring them out. And when you follow it with a sweep of mascara, your eyes will be something to admire!

Tip #6 - Eyeshadows

Of course, there’s no better product for accenting your eyes than eyeshadow! Now you don’t have to overdo it or mix too many colors to get the perfect look. My advice is to apply a neutral color to your lids, with an accent color on the outside, and then a softer (I usually choose a white or light pink) color for the inside corner and the area right below your eyebrow.

Don’t walk around with a tired look on your face during one of Mary Kay’s biggest weeks. Liven up your tired eyes today and go on celebrating! What do you do to help bring your eyes to life? Let us know in the comment section below.

And if you haven’t done so already, check out our new app, MyUnitBuzz! It’s exclusively designed for Directors and NSDs to use to send important messages, event details, share pictures, etc., with their Unit, and for Unit members to access and view all of the exciting new info.
