WARNING! 12 Things You Should Know Before Joining Mary Kay

Mary Kay makeup brush and cosmetics

Before pursuing a career in the Mary Kay industry, there are a couple of things—about twelve of them—that you need to know!

We promise you’ll like what you’re about to hear!

#1 The Mary Kay Way

Mary Kay Ash founded her company on the principle of faith first, family second, and career third.

Mary Kay Ash adamantly believed in this golden principle, and for almost 50 years now it has been followed throughout her company.

Pretty amazing, right? Over 50 years following the same guiding voice!

#2 Safety is Always First Priority

When it comes to makeup and skincare, Mary Kay has always been top of the line—mostly because of the tireless safety testing the company performs.

Mary Kay does an average of about 300,000 tests on products every year to ensure safety.

Be prepared when you work with Mary Kay to work with the best makeup line out there.

#3 Your Earnings as an Independent Beauty Consultant

The first thing most people think about when starting a new career is their personal success.

Luckily for you, your possibilities are endless with Mary Kay.

What you put into your career is what you’ll get out of it when it comes to this company.

What other company can tell you that you have the ability to make as much money as you want to?

#4 Mary Kay is Global

Mary Kay’s ethics and quality of products have allowed it to be sold in over 35 countries worldwide.

In almost all the Americas and even into Asia, Mary Kay has left a pink footprint all over the map.

#5 The Group You’re Joining

Prepare to be welcomed into the Mary Kay family.

And with over 3.5 million Independent Beauty Consultants, 39,000 Directors, and 600 NSDs, it’s a rather larger family.

But all the same, you’ll always be surrounded by women who support you and your accomplishments.

#6 The Work Ethic You Need

Nothing in life comes easy.

As Mary Kay Ash once said, “God feeds the birds, but he doesn’t throw it into their nest.”

When you join Mary Kay, it will be fun and exciting, but remember you do have to work for it.

Put in a little bit of effort and you’ll be amazed at where success will take you—maybe even in a pink Cadillac.

#7 It’s Not Just About the Makeup

Sure, Mary Kay is known for its premium makeup lines, but the company is much more than that.

Mary Kay founded the MK Ash Charitable Foundation, donating money to help fight women’s cancer, as well as launching campaigns against domestic violence.

When you become a part of Mary Kay, you become part of a larger network of people all working towards something greater.

Take this, for example, the Mary Kay company logged about 500,000 volunteer hours during their Global Month of Service.

#8 Your Unit will be Like a Family

When you join Mary Kay, you usually do so under the guidance of a Director—a person who once started where you were.

Your Unit will be your family, your biggest supporters, and your source of encouragement. Depend on them!

#9 Pink Cars Rule

The pink Cadillac is synonymous with the Mary Kay company.

Everyone who joins wants to one day drive in a nice, shiny pink Cadillac. And you can!

What other company out there gives you a pink car that’s completely paid off for a whole year?

#10 The Popularity of the Bee

If you did any research on Mary Kay, you would know that the bumblebee is a pretty integral part of the company.

And before you start working as an independent beauty consultant, you should know why.

Mary Kay Ash once said that “Aerodynamically, the bumblebee shouldn’t be able to fly, but the bumblebee doesn't know it, so it goes on flying anyways.”

Just like the bee, you too can do the impossible as long as you believe you can.

#11 UnitWise

When you join UnitWise, you can completely organize your Mary Kay business.

UnitWise is one of the only cloud-based solutions designed just for Mary Kay professionals to keep their business running smoothly.

And you can try it free for 30 days.

#12 MyUnitBuzz

MyUnitBuzz can help you share exciting news and details with your Unit members, training documents, and pictures.

And did we mention, it’s included for FREE with your UnitWise membership?

Yuck! 9 Reason Why Your Skin Keeps Breaking Out

You’ve tried just about everything!

From deep pore cleaners to powerful acne-fighting medicine, it seems like nothing can keep your face clear.

I mean, you and I both probably have read every book and article about the best acne treatments.

I even tried rubbing magnets on my face to draw out the dirt (kidding, of course).

So why isn’t anything working?

This might surprise you: it isn’t your acne medicine. It’s you.

Intrigued? Here are 9 reason why your skin keeps breaking out.

#1 Your phone

Prepare for the gross factor!

Your phone is the top reason your face keeps breaking out.

Think about it, you use your phone everywhere you go, everywhere.

From the bathroom, the bus stop, to the kitchen, the yard, and your car—your phone has been everywhere you have been.

And then you put it on your face to make calls.

To avoid the breakouts: Try keeping your phone in clean areas and always wipe off the screen with a disinfected wipe before using it.

#2 Not taking your makeup off before bed

Completely guilty!

When I make the mistake of not removing my makeup before I crawl into bed at night, I always wake up the next morning with a new friend on my face—well I guess it’s more like an enemy on my face.

Leaving your makeup on at night doesn’t allow your skin to breathe and repair itself after a long day.

To avoid the breakouts: It’s simple. Remember to take your makeup off at night! You can set out your makeup removal products on the counter to help you better remember.

#3 Too much chlorine

Alright, where are the swimmers at?

Swimming is an amazing workout and a great way to relax during the heat of summer, but unfortunately, the chlorine that keeps your pool clean isn’t doing much to keep your face clean.

In fact, chlorine clings to your skin and can react to your acne medication.

And you know what that means—acne!

To avoid the breakouts: On the days you decide to take a dip in the pool, take a break from your acne treatments. Soap and water will do just fine as a face cleaner.

#4 Your coffee obsession

Yes, can I get an Iced Skinny Cinnamon Dolce Latte?

Well, you can, but it will break your skin out!

Coffee, and Caffeine in general suck the moisture out of your skin, causing more breakouts and blemishes to pop up.

How to avoid the breakouts: Drink more water! And you can even dress water up with some berries, oranges, or lemons.

#5 Avoiding meals (especially breakfast)

So just like a coffee can break your skin out, skipping meals can have the same effect!

When you avoid meals, your body’s missing out on some key nutrients like vitamin C, B3, E, and A, causing your skin to dry out and fail to repair itself.

How to avoid the breakouts: Eat five to six small meals a day. And be sure to include plenty of vitamins into your diet to give your skin the extra boost of moisture it needs.

#6 Trying on too many makeup products

I know, I’m trying to tell a fish not to swim in water with this one, but trying too much makeup on can cause your skin to breakout.

And using too much makeup on a regular basis traps your pores and keeps your skin from breathing.

And sure, it’s a catch 22.

You put on more makeup to cover problem areas only to cause more problem areas to form.

How to avoid the breakouts: Use the lightest (most breathable) makeup you can, and apply it lightly. Also, remember to remove it every night before bed.

#7 Dirty pillows and sheets

Here we go again with the yuck factor!

Although you might be getting up in the morning and leaving your bed behind, your dead skin cells on your pillowcase aren’t.

And over time, these skin cells collect and cause bacteria, which naturally comes in contact with your skin every time you lay back down at night.

How to avoid the breakouts: Try changing your pillowcase every week to avoid any lingering toxins waiting to break out your face.

#8 Exfoliating your skin too much

Don’t you just love the feel of your skin after a good exfoliation?

I know I do!

But if you exfoliate your skin too often, you’re stripping it of the necessary moisture and natural oils it needs to repair itself.

And when your skin lacks moisture and oils, you lose the natural glow and open the door for breakouts to happen.

How to avoid breakouts: Only exfoliate your skin once a week to keep it healthy.

#9 Long (but oh so lovely) hot showers

No one can deny the enjoyment that comes from taking a nice long hot shower after a stressful day.

Well except for your skin that is.

Taking hot showers for a long period removes the outermost layer of the epidermis.

And when you dry out your skin and remove lovely layers of your epidermis, your skin becomes more susceptible to acne.

How to avoid the breakouts: When you notice your skin turning red or starting to itch, it’s time to cut the shower off and grab your moisturizer.

Who would have thought that simple things we do on a daily basis cause our skin to keep breaking out?

Now we know what to watch out for!

Tell us, what is something you do on regular bases that causes your skin to breakout? Share it with us in the comment section below or on our Facebook page to help fight the constant breakout struggle.

How to Ask for the Sale and Get it Every Time

In past blogs, we talked about how to get customers interested in what you sell, how to build up your confidence, and how to establish trust.

You remember, right?

To make a sale successful, you had to listen to what your customer really wanted and to solve their problem. You then had to show them how your products could benefit them.

But out of all this advice (and we sure hope you found it useful), we saved the best lesson for last: how to ask for the sale, and get it every time.

Do we have your attention with that? Awesome! Let’s dive right in.

The Control Illusion

You enjoy having control over your decisions and choices, don’t you? So why treat your customers any different?

When you’re trying to sell a product, make your customers feel in control of the decision to buy.

Need an example?

OK, imagine that you and your significant other are hungry and wanting to go out for dinner. You want to go to your favorite Italian restaurant, but your partner isn’t sure they want that. So you suggest two restaurants. The Italian restaurant has an open reservation in 30 minutes and the other restaurant has a reservation at 9:30 p.m. You give your significant other the choice. Since both of you are really hungry, your significant other decides that the Italian restaurant is the best option for tonight.

Now apply this to your situation. To put your customer in control, always show them multiple options and give them the opportunity to choose for themselves.

You’ll be surprised at how much it can boost your sales.

Avoid Yes or No Questions

When you are trying to make a sell, you’ll want to avoid any questions that could be answered with a yes or a no.

Simple questions that can be answered simply aren’t welcome in the world of sales. Trust us!

For example. Avoid questions like “can I help you?” Or “are you looking for something specific?” These questions allow for your customers to walk away without a second thought.

So ask something that has to be explained, or at least something that causes your customer to say more than just one word.

When you’re wanting to set up a demo with a customer, ask them: “what day of the week would be better for you, Monday or Tuesday?

Or, “Mary Kay just released a new lip color, do you prefer a deeper red or a more pink look?

Make your customers speak to you. It’s the surest way to keep their attention, capture their excitement, and make them want to buy all of your products.

Don’t Leave Room for Second Guessing

Just this week, I walked into a store to browse their clothing line. My intention was to window shop and to look around, but not buy.

Until I met Maria. Maria is the super-friendly clerk at this shop and in ten minutes she had me convinced not only to buy their newly released spring outfit, but to also sign up for their store membership.

Want to know what Maria did that had a non-buyer like me ready to buy everything?

She solved all my problems. She made her clothing line the best out there. She asked me in depth questions to learn more about my style, my work, and what I loved to see myself in. She showed me options. She didn’t leave room for me to second guess my decision. And you want to know something. I’m glad she didn’t.

People naturally second guess everything; it’s in our nature. So to close the deal with your customers, eliminate the time where they can second guess.

For example, say “OK, I think this product is the best one out there for what you’re looking for. This foundation will provide you the coverage you’re looking for. So why not give it a try, we’ll get you checked out.”

You didn’t leave your customer any room to back out, to second guess.

And I bet you made the sale, too.

So Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultants, Directors, and NSDs, are you ready to close more sales and to have happier (new) customers?

We hope these tips have helped you ask for the sale, and to get it everytime.

But share your experiences with us! What do you do to help make the sale with your customers? Send us your comments in the comment section below or share it with us on our Facebook page.

She Said What?! 6 Ways to Keep Your Cool in Stressful Situations

Life can be tough. Work can be stressful. And your patience, well, that can wear thin real fast.

But in the career path you chose for yourself, you can’t lose your cool.

You’re a Director or NSD, and people depend on you to solve problems in the calmest way possible.

So what do you do? How do you keep your cool in stressful situations no matter what she or he might have said?

Keep reading to find out just how you can do it!

1. Stay Positive

Easier said than done? Absolutely not!

Being positive is as simple as convincing yourself (and your mind) that you can be happy in spite of the stress you’re under.

Be confident in the decision you make and be happy.

Letting stress take over and affect your mood can have a heavy impact on your health. Why let stress win? Work on your positivity.

2. Avoid Caffeine

When you feel like you have a lot on your plate, what’s the first thing you reach for? I know in my case, I go straight for the coffee pot.

My thought is that coffee (or any caffeine for that matter) is going to help power me through the situation, keeping me alert and focused the whole time.

While the alert part is true for caffeine, it might not be the best when the situation you’re dealing with is a stressful one.

Caffeine can cause you to feel more overwhelmed, maybe even more so than you originally were in the first place.

So reach for another drink that can help you feel refreshed and focused, like strawberry and mint flavored water for example.

3. Make a Plan

One of your Unit members is throwing a party, but she’s worried.

She’s called you panicked that she won’t have enough products, or that she won’t have enough help to do demos. She’s stressed and it’s making you stressed.

What do you do?

When a stressful situations creeps up on you, it’s always best to have a plan.

You can tackle the issue and work toward a goal by having a plan of action in place. So let the planner in you come out!

4. Ask for Help

Sometimes when something gets too stressful, remember that you always have your fellow Mary Kay Directors and NSDs to lean on for support.

Ask them your questions, voice your concerns, and get their advice.

When you’re facing a stressful situation it’s OK (and useful) to ask for help. The best in the business always do!

Besides, isn’t that what this whole organization is about? Helping each other reach their goals and make their dreams come true? We sure think so!

5. Look at the Big Picture

Say a situation has come up where one of your Unit members wants to throw a party her own way.

It goes against the typical way your Unit usually host parties and demos. You talk to her about it, but it’s only causing more tension.

So how do you fix it?

Our advice is to look at the bigger picture. Will this situation affect what happens to you (and your Unit) in a week, in a month, by next year?

When you look at a specific situation from the bigger picture, it helps you rationalize whether this is something worth raising your your stress level over.

6. Practice Patience

At the end of the day, you can have all the plans and help in the world, but you have to have patience.

When you practice patience, you’ll be amazed at how well you’ll be able to stay calm, cool, and collected in stressful situations.

How in the world do you practice patience though? Isn’t that just a natural ability? Nope! You can practice patience every single day. Here’s how:

  1. Stand in the longest line each time you go to the store.
  2. Instead of using the drive-thru for your bank, fast food, etc., park your car and go inside.
  3. Exercise! When you take walks or runs, it will releases hormones that not only help your mood, but your patience as well.

Work on these steps everyday and watch the difference they make in your patience level.

So Directors, are you ready to keep your cool in stressful situations? We believe in you and know that you can!

Tell us, what’s an instance that you had to stay calm? How did you do it? Let us know in the comment section below or share with us on our Facebook page.

Go Green: Makeup Tips to Green Up Your St. Patty’s Day Look

St. Patty’s Day is this Thursday! Time to pull out every green item you have in your closet and dig to the bottom of your product bag for green makeup. Because hey, it’s the only time you can turn completely green and it be a good thing. So what are you waiting for? Grab your leprechaun hat and let’s green it up! Find out below just how green you can be this Thursday with these St. Patty’s Day makeup tips.

For Starters

To start your beautiful St. Patty’s Day look, smooth on some of your favorite foundation. And if you’re curious to know, there is a correct way to apply your foundation. Check out this blog full of foundation tips.

Next, sweep powder across your t-zone area to eliminate shine for a more even and smooth complexion. You can even brush hints of color, bronze or blush, on your cheekbones to create more definition to that beautiful face of yours.

Alright, now that we’ve got a good even foundation to work with, let’s have some fun with your St. Patty’s makeup design.

Bold, Beautiful, Green Eyes

Nothing says St. Patty’s Day like a bold neon green eyeliner! Alright maybe neon isn’t your thing, but changing up from the regular black or brown eyeliner for this holiday can be just the splash of bright you need to really bring out your St. Patty’s Day spirit. Just try it!

And for extra fun, try applying a nice cat eye look with the green eyeliner. Hey, it’s fun, it’s daring, it’s St. Patty’s Day!

Envious Green Eyeshadow

OK, maybe the neon was too bold of a color choice for you, so what about adding a touch of green to your eyes with some eyeshadow? From mixing colors to applying it to the right areas, going green has never been so easy.

shutterstock_203050279.jpgTo really capture the St. Patty’s Day look and to accentuate your eyes, choose a lightly colored green hue—think mid-green level. Now you’ll want to apply the eyeshadow to both your top and lower lash lines. Yep! We want both sides to be coated in this pretty green color. But for starters, apply green eyeshadow right below your bottom lash line.

Feeling a little silly with eyeshadow under your eyes? Well, don’t! We’re still not done with our look quite yet. You’ll next want to find another green-hued eyeshadow (maybe one with a little bit of gold in it) to create a duo-tone look on your upper eyelid. Apply the lighter hue to the inner corners of your eyes. This helps your eyes to appear more bright and awake. (Take a peek at one of our previous blogs where we tell you other secrets and ways you can use to brighten up your eyes.) After applying the lighter color to the inners of you eyes, sweep the darker green out towards the outer part of your eye and up towards your eyebrow.

Lovely Leprechaun Lips

Bare with me on this one—you’re about to paint your lips green. To really go all out on St. Patty’s Day and to finish off our look, we suggest using a lightly hued color for your lips. We’ve found that lip liner lasts longer than regular lipstick. Who knew, right? And for those of you who might not have green lip liner, you can always use green eyeliner. I know, crazy right? To make eyeliner usable as a lip liner, burn the tip of the eyeliner for just a second. Ta da! So now you have no more excuses why you can’t have lovely green lips this St. Patty’s Day.

Pot of Gold Accessories

No St. Patty’s Day look would be complete without a green hat and shamrocks! From stickers to full-on outfits, make sure you find a pot of gold when you finish your look with some much-needed accessories. Attach tiny four-leaf clover stickers to the sides of eyes, or on your cheeks for an extra bold statement. Or find a lucky green hat to wear to make for a fun look! You can even paint your nails in a shimmering green color, or go bold and (temporarily) dye your hair green. The St. Patty’s Day possibilities are endless!

What are your plans for St. Patty’s Day, and how do you plan to do your makeup? Share with us in the comment section below or on our Facebook page.
