How Did She Do it? Balance Your Work and Home Life Like Mary Kay

Mary Kay Ash—an entrepreneur, a founder, a mother, a wife. Starting a company with an annual revenue of four billion dollars, with over 35 markets around the world—Mary Kay Ash created a successful (awe-inspiring) legacy for herself. But how did she do it? How was Ms. Ash able to balance her work and her home life? And what lessons can we learn from her?

Keep reading to find out how you can balance your work and home life, just like Mary Kay!

1. Believe in Yourself

If you think you can, you can. And if you think you can’t, you’re right.

The first thing you need to do when trying to reorganize and rebalance your work and home life is to believe in yourself. When you do, you’ll exude the confidence you need to get everything done with work–whether that’s a party or a demo in the mall—and be able to go home at night and not worry about it until the next day.

2. Stick to it

Give yourself something to work toward–constantly.

When you set up your work hours—stick to the plan. You’ll never be able to balance your work and home life if you don’t adhere to what you set as boundaries. You might have to break the rule from time to time, but as Mary Kay Ash would say, you always have to work to reach what you want.

3. Choose What Really Matters

You can have anything in this world you want, if you want it badly enough and you’re willing to pay the price.

When you decide you really want to balance your work and home life, you’ll need to choose what really matters. Is being home in time to greet your kids from the bus stop important? Or is it alright to plan a Mary Kay party around 7 p.m.? You have to answer the questions for yourself, and when you figure out what really matters, and when it matters—you’ll be able to start balancing your work and home life, perfectly.

4. Know That it Takes Time

A good goal is like a strenuous exercise—it makes you stretch.

Just like any good goal, it takes times and work to get there. To have a healthy, productive work life and a happy home life, it will take time to learn the balance, or what works and doesn’t. There may be times when you need to schedule demos during home time, or when you need to cut into work time to attend a family matter.  And that’s OK, just know that finding the perfect balance takes time and practice. As Mary Kay Ash says, it makes you stretch.

So friends, understand that it takes time, you’ll have to decide what really matters, believe that you can find the perfect balance, and above all, be able to stick to it. We hope you find these tips helpful. And before you go, we’ll leave you with a final quote from Ms. Mary Kay Ash

Aerodynamically, the bumblebee shouldn't be able to fly, but the bumblebee doesn't know it so it goes on flying anyway.

6 Inspiring Leadership Traits to Copy

In today’s world, it can be difficult for people to stay motivated and to want to continue down the same path for too long. With new technological developments, changing lifestyle trends, etc.—not a day goes by that something can’t be improved on. So, let’s start today! Improve your leadership skills and inspire your Unit more than ever before with these six inspiring leadership traits.

It’s pretty logical if you think about it. If you want to be an inspiring leader for others, you first need to inspire yourself. Passion drives success, and when you show your Unit your passion for what you do, they’ll be sure to follow. Now this doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be extremely passionate about the products you sell. Gasp! I know, but hear me out. Your passion can extend past just the products to include being passionate about helping someone feel more confident and beautiful in their own skin. Phew, recovered that one!

Personable and Authentic

Most of your Unit members work hard every day to reach the goals you have set for the team—whether that’s by increasing sales by 10% or gaining a new customers. However, if you truly want to keep your Unit members inspired and working harder towards a goal, show them that there is something in it for them. Your Unit members want to know, “is what I’m doing going to help me become a Director, myself?” If you can answer that question, you’ll have a Unit full of inspired people! And the best way to do this is by being personable with your Unit. Talk candidly to them and let them know you’re here to help them succeed in every way possible. Hey, have you tried MyUnitBuzz? It makes communicating with your Unit easier to do, and it’s free with a UnitWise account.

Now I know it can be difficult to always be optimistic, but as a leader, you should never let your negativity show. Most great leaders have a positive attitude, helping them encourage their team to keep working hard, even when problems arise. Just like having enthusiasm, being positive can take your success as a leader to new heights.

My mother always told me, “you attract more flies with honey than you do vinegar.” It’s a lesson I’ve applied to all aspects of my life and one you too can use as a leader. When you show your Unit compassion and kindness, the reward you’ll get in return is an inspired team. People want to work for someone who shows kindness to them, who is there to guide and help them when they need it. A kind leader is always the best type to be.

Admit it, there’s always one person in the Unit who can triple the sales of any other Unit member. They’re great at what they do, but does that mean you always give them attention and ignore everyone else? We sure hope not! One of the best ways to keep all of your Unit members inspired is to show fairness to everyone. Give equal attention to everyone in your Unit, not just the ones excelling at making sales. When you do, your Unit will be more eager to work harder, knowing that what they’re doing is appreciated.

You don’t just become a leader (Director or NSD) overnight. It takes years of hard work, determination, and skill to get to where you are. But that doesn’t mean people need to respect you instantly—respect is earned. By knowing how to walk the walk and talk the talk, you’ll gain more respect and inspire your Unit members to be better each and every day.

A little bit of kindness, fairness, and respectfulness can go a long way. So, directors and NSDs, what do you think about these traits of an inspiring leader? Let us know in the comment section below, or share your own traits with us on our Facebook page.

Stop the Stress Effect! Ways to Fight Signs of Stress on Your Skin

Stress is the worst! It can cause you to lose sleep, eat more food, and it even breaks your skin out. Not fun! And with the fast-paced world speeding around us, it can be difficult to escape the stress of the day. There’s inventory to be restocked, demos with new clients to be held, and parties, parties, parties to plan. But your health and your skin’s health depend on you to stop the stress! So, my friends, don’t stress (yeah, we went there), the UnitWise heroes are here to help you keep your beautiful skin healthy and smooth. Let’s get started!

Sleep, sleep, sleep

When you’re stressed, you don’t sleep very well. Stress affects your mind, causing it to continuously work. And when you don’t sleep well, your skin doesn’t have time to recoup from the busy day. Sleep is when our skin works to repair itself from any damage. Take away sleep and your skin might appear more stressed, uneven, and with the appearance of blemishes. So take advantage of at least seven hours of sleep—it’s why they call it beauty sleep after all.

Drink Black Tea

I am a big coffee drinker, but when I’m stressed, I always put down my thermos and pick up a mug of black tea—my favorite being Earl Grey. Studies conducted at University College London show that when participants were given a stressful task, those who drank tea had their cortisol levels drop by 47% after the assignment was finished. The control group’s (those who didn’t drink tea) cortisol level only dropped by 27%. To put it simply, those who drank black tea recovered faster after a stressful situation.

Happy Exercising

Exercising, whether that’s by walking, running, swimming, hiking, etc. is a great way to boost your body’s circulation and fight the effects adrenaline (caused by stress) can have on your skin. And it’s also been proven that people who spend more time outside have lower cortisol levels. Trust me, anything you can do to reduce those cortisol levels is great!

Dancing Queen

How many of you have a favorite song that brightens your day every time you hear it? I know I have one—Down in the Valley by the Head and the Heart. It puts me in a good mood every. single. time. Studies show the more music you listen to during stressful situations, the calmer your body is. And when you’re calm, your skin doesn’t suffer from stress!

Mediate Now

With holistic practices like yoga, meditation, and reiki, stress doesn’t have to rule your mind (or your skin) anymore. Practicing daily bouts of meditation or yoga can reduce your cortisol levels by 20%. Is that amazing or what? By simply calming your mind, you can save yourself from being overly stressed and keep your skin healthy and smooth. Need help adapting to a more holistic lifestyle? Check out these awesome blogs on HealingRadius—a site dedicated to helping people find their center.

How do you cope with stressful situations? Why don’t you give these methods a try and see how healthy your skin looks!

Improving Your Confidence Can Help Boost Your Sales

When Maria in the Sound of Music was traveling to the Von Trapp family’s home to become the children’s new nanny, she was singing an inspirational song. Do you remember what is was?

“I have confidence in sunshine. I have confidence in rain. I have confidence that spring will come again. Besides which you see I have confidence in me!”

Ah, now you remember! Pretty catchy tune, right? And now that it’s officially stuck in my head (and yours) for the remainder of the day, I can explain why I chose to include it in this post. The main takeaways from the song called for you to believe in yourself and have confidence in your abilities. For Maria, she needed the confidence to travel to a new home to care for children she’s never met before. And for you, you need the confidence to meet new people every day, sell makeup, and be an outstanding Unit member. Because it seems the more confidence you have (just like for Maria), the better things (your sales) will be!

So what are you waiting for? Let’s boost your confidence and your sales!

Confidence Booster #1: Believe in What You Sell

I know I’ve mentioned this time and time again, but when you believe in your products, you’ll increase your sales. Luckily for you, you’re partnered with a company that has values and traits that almost everyone can get behind. And the quality of your products is top-notch, too! This helps make the part of believing in your products and company a little bit easier, doesn’t it?

When you have confidence in the quality of your products and what you do, you can reassure your potential customers of the value and effectiveness of what you’re offering them.

Confidence Booster #2: Practice Your Communication

We all do it. As soon as you start talking to someone you’ve never met before, it seems like your mouth becomes drier, your palms get sweatier, and your voice starts to tremble. It’s anxiousness, and it happens to all of us, which is why practice makes perfect. Before you can convincingly sell a product to a customer, you need to have confidence in what you’re going to say. Practice or write out the major takeaways you want your customer to know about the product(s) you’re selling. Prepare answers to potential questions you believe your customers might ask—it all helps!

To become more confident and sell more products, all it takes is a little bit of practice!

Confidence Booster #3: You Don’t Have to Know it All

There will be times when you just simply don’t know the answer to your customer’s questions, or you’re not sure about all the ingredients that go into making the product—that’s OK! You don’t have to be a walking book to make a sale; you just need your customers to know that you’re confident in what you sell and that you’ll find the answers for them.

So don’t panic! All you need to do is go the extra mile and find the answer. And hey, if you don't know something, isn't that what your awesome director is for? They’re there to help you when you need it the most!

Confidence Booster #4: Keep Up with Your Success

One of the absolute best ways to build your confidence is to write down all of your accomplishments. Did you sell five different products this week? Meet with a new client? Host a party? Those are all great successes and something you should be proud of!

When you write down and keep track of a record of your accomplishments, you’ll notice your confidence improving a little each day. Try it!

Confidence Booster #5: Think Long-Term in Your Goals

Goals! Everyone needs to set them so you have something to work towards on a daily basis. So what are some of your long-term goals? Do you want to become a Director or an NSD? Is a pink Cadillac your dream car? If so, then work towards that every day!

Knowing what you want or where you want to be is the biggest step you can take on your road to building your confidence. When you know the path you want to take and you’re confident about it, your sales will double in size. Just keep after it!

Alright, my friends, it’s time to believe in yourself, trust in your abilities, and have confidence! Once you’ve got all that lined up, you’ll be selling products left and right.

Do you have a secret to building your confidence? If so, share it with us in the comment section below or on our Facebook page. We love hearing from you!

Fall in Love with These Perfect Valentine Makeup Looks!

Aw Valentine’ Day! A day filled with chocolate, flowers, love, and oh yes—makeup! It wouldn’t be Valentine’s Day without dinner, a movie, and a new bold makeup look. So are you ready to try a new look for your big Valentine’s date? If you are, then we have some exciting makeup tips to give you that extra sparkle. Check them out!

And for those not really interested in Valentine’s Day, these are still great makeup secrets to know, so you should still take a peek!

Makeup Tip #1: Flushed Cheeks

Flushed cheeks—the perfect touch of color for your sparkling face! Want to know how you can get the look? You’ll need: brushes, blush, and highlighting powder. After you’ve applied foundation to your face, blend in blush that is pink with a touch of warmth in it to the apples of your cheeks, sweeping it back towards your ear. To really make your cheeks stand out, apply highlighting powder right above your cheekbones. And there you go, perfectly flushed cheeks!

Makeup Tip #2: Shimmery, Dewy Complexion

Ever see those girls in the movie or in pictures that have almost a dewy-like complexion? Gorgeous, right? Well lucky for us, this look is actually easier to achieve than you might think! Before applying any makeup, amp up your moisturizing game by using hydration mask. This splash of moisture to your face will help your foundation go on like butter and your face to shimmer!

Makeup Tip #3: Eyes that Sparkle

Really capture your partner’s eye this holiday with the perfect shimmer. To get the look, grab two shimmery eyeshadows, one darker, one lighter. Apply the darker eyeshadow (I prefer to use a fluffier brush) to the outer corner of your eye, and then work in the lighter shade towards the inner and underneath. Remember to blend!

Makeup Tip #4: Puuurfect Cat Eye

While we’re on the subject of eyes, why not add in a bit of daring with a dramatic set of cat eyes. You know, the winged-tip design you create with eyeliner? All you need is a liquid eyeliner (works the best) to create this look! Start from the innermost corner of your eye and draw a line along and then out past the outermost corner, creating a sharp line at the end.

Makeup Tip #5: Pink it up!

Of course everyone says the color of Valentine’s is red, but what if we told you, you should reach for the pink lipstick instead! Although red is bold and beautiful, pink is a great color to choose if you want to go for a softer, more natural look.

Makeup Tip #6: Plump Your Lashes

Bring more attention to those beautiful eyes of yours by adding some volume to your lashes. If you want to know how to get that perfect lash look, check out one of our previous makeup blogs here.

Makeup Tip #7: Smile and Have Fun

One of the prettiest accessories a person could ever have/wear is their smile. No amount of highlighting powder can brighten your face quite like your smile can. So wear it proudly and enjoy spending time with people you love this Valentine’s Day!

Are you ready for a special date with your honey or a night out on the town with friends? Whatever your occasion, we hope these makeup tips have helped! Let us know in the comment section below or share with us on our Facebook page what your plans are for Valentine’s Day and how you are going to do your makeup!

7 Foundational Secrets of Foundation

Flawless foundation doesn’t have to be a myth! You can get stunning foundation results every day with just a few simple tricks. Ready to find out what they are?

And for all of you makeup artists out there, quiz yourself and see how many of these foundational secrets of foundation you knew!

Secret #1: Select the Right Shade

Every time I go to buy a new bottle of foundation, my mother’s voice echoes in the back of my head, “Make sure your face matches your neck.” And if you’ve seen our guys and girls Mary Kay makeup challenge, you’ll see that that’s the number one mistake the guys made when applying the girls’ makeup. (If you missed the makeup video, view it here.)

So to make sure that you’re well-blended, it’s best to try out foundation shades on your jawbone, instead of the back of your hand. Trust me, it makes a huge difference!

Secret #2: Buy Two!

Depending on the season, you may want to purchase two different shades of foundation. In many cases, mine for sure, foreheads and cheeks become tanner than the rest of a person’s face during the summer. So what I do to keep my face looking natural is purchase two different shades—a dark and a light. I apply the darker foundation in places that appear tanner (my forehead and nose) and lighter foundations on my chin, under my eyes, and the hollows of my cheek. It helps give me the natural summer look I’m wanting.

Secret #3: Use a Foundation Brush

If you’re anything like me, the thought of using a foundation brush just seems like too much effort. But if you want the perfect, flawless foundation look, you’ve got to reach for that brush. And it’s true, although I rarely use a brush, it does create a smooth finish. Brushes provide a more even coverage to your face, compared to other methods.

Secret #4: Go Down, Not Up

Hooray for purchasing a foundation brush, but now you need to make sure you use it just right. When creating your beautiful, flawless foundation look, always swipe downwards with the brush. Wondering why? By swiping the brush in an upward movement, you cause foundation to fill your pores—in turn making them appear more noticeable.

Secret #5: Always Start in the Middle

All of the redness that I have in my skin tends to be in my T-zone area (forehead and nose). So I typically start in the middle because it’s where the most coverage needs to be. I apply the majority of my foundation on my T-zone and then work the foundation outward. This helps my cheeks, my nose, and my forehead get the coverage they need without my face appearing caked with makeup.

Secret #6: A Light Dusting

So you’ve applied the foundation and got the coverage you need, but you still want to add a dust of powder to your face? Why of course you do! Powder helps settle and set your foundation, but too much is just, well, too much! To avoid over-powdering, it’s best to keep powder just to the T-zone area. It will give you the right coverage and evenness your skin needs without overdoing it.

Secret #7: Wash and Moisturizer

And to create your perfect makeup look, always make sure your wash off all of your makeup off and moisturizer your face at the end of the night. Removing your makeup helps your skin to breathe and to repair any damage it might have received throughout the day. Moisturizing also puts in much needed vitamins and nutrients that bring life and a beautiful glow to your skin.

OK, tally them up! How many of these foundational makeup secrets did you know? And even if you knew all of them, they’re great tricks to share with potential clients or at your next Mary Kay party.

Makeup Trends Through the Decades

You have the knack, right? You know, the knack for being able to tell the different decades of makeup? Just as one can easily tell the difference in the styles of clothing from the 70s to the 2000s, one can do the same with makeup. And what might surprise you the most is how much trends repeat and reappear again several decades (and even centuries) later.

So come on friends, let’s take a walk down makeup memory lane together.

Victorian Beauties - The 1800s

Let’s start our little journey during one of the most highly popularized centuries in history—the Victorian Era. Now during this period, the term “makeup” had not been coined, and it wouldn’t be until the 1870s. Instead, women referred to it as cosmetics.

Ladies of Leisure found that most of their daily cosmetic routine was to ensure their eyebrows were plucked, their eyelashes were trimmed, and castor oil was applied to their eyelids and lashes. Of course, freckles, redness, or any other uneven skin was to be dusted away with rice or pearl powder (yes, I said pearl powder). Ladies also applied a beeswax-like substance to their lips to produce a shine, some wax even came with crushed flowers to produce a hint of color. Women also took to rubbing red beet juice on their cheeks to help give contrast to their pale powder. And of course, to help ensure that they had the brightest of eyes at the party, they would place a drop of lemon or orange juice into each eye. Ouch!

Roaring Twenties - The 1920s

Skipping ahead a couple of decades we land in the middle of the roaring twenties—men were returning home from the first world war and economic prosperity was abundant. Parties, parades, and other spectaculars decorate this period, and makeup became more popular! The image of the flapper girl emerges with her thin, well-plucked, skinny eyebrows, bow-like red lips, creamy face powder, dark eyeliner smudged around the eyes, and rouge (blush) applied to the apples of the cheek.

Baby Boomer Decade - The 1950s

Also known as the wholesome decade—women during this period went away from the glamorous look to a more simple makeup effect. Foundation, especially pancake, was very popular. And although simple, women did keep their bright red lips. Luckily during this time, women could move away from the thin eyebrow look and go for a more natural appeal.

Disco Fever - The 1970s

Get ready to turn it up on the dance floor, because this decade was all about the glitz and glamour—and skincare. Women began focusing more on skincare and face creams to boost more of a natural look. And we also welcomed bronzer powder during this decade!

The Shoulder Pad Era - 1980s

So forget the natural look and say hello to bright, bold, and beautiful! To mirror the famous pop stars on the scene during this decade, like Madonna, many women picked up a new trend—pops of color! Colored eyeshadows in colors like blues, greens, and pinks paired with outrageous lipsticks in pinks and reds were all the rage.

The Millennium - The 2000s

It seems we see a blending of makeup trends when we enter into the 2000s. Women can be seen with beautiful 1920s looks with bow-like red lips, Egyptian wingback eyeliner like the Egyptians wore in 4000 B.C., or even spy the 80s with their bright pink lipstick. The 2000s have already proven to be a millennium all of their own, with unique trends and styles changing every day.

So ladies, what is your favorite makeup decade? Let us know in the comment section below or share it with us on our Facebook page. We love hearing from our users!
