Can Makeup Protect Your Skin From The Sun?

We’re deep into the summer, meaning blazing temperatures and harmful sun rays are lurking around every corner. However, if you aren’t spending the day at the beach or by the pool, what’s the worry?

Well, currently the Ultraviolet (UV) Index has a rating between 8 to 11+ across the nation so you can easily get sunburned in as little to 10 to 25 minutes.

During your daily routine whether it includes activities like walking your dog, walking to the coffee shop, sitting by a sunny window, or sitting in your car are all normal activities where you’re exposing yourself to the sun’s damaging rays.

Why Do You Want To Protect Your Skin From Sun damage?

Sun damage is responsible for a variety conditions, including:

  • Premature skin aging
  • Sun spots
  • Skin irritation
  • Skin cancer
  • Melanoma
  • Freckles and more!

But Makeup Can Protect My Skin?

Yes, makeup can protect your skin, and it’s great for preventing sun damage during your normal schedule. Please keep in mind that if you’re going to be outdoors for more than 20 to 30 minutes, you will need to use sunscreen.

It might seem scary to face the intense summer sun now, but have no fear. You can fight back against pesky UV rays during your daily routine with easy to find everyday makeup.

First things first, when you’re looking for a certain type of makeup for skin protection, look at the ingredients. Zinc oxide, titanium oxide, avobenzone, and octocrylene are all great for defense against the sun.

Start with a liquid moisturizer in either cream or spray form, like TimeWise® Age-Fighting Moisturizer Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30. Most moisturizers have an SPF around 15 and others range from SPF 30 to 50. Apply your moisturizer to any areas of exposed skin, like your chest, face, ears, and even the back of your neck.

Once your moisturizer has dried, be sure to protect the delicate skin around your eyes with an eye cream that has a broad spectrum that ranges from SPF 10 to 50.

Then apply a liquid concealer to your skin with a SPF between 8 and 50. When considering which SPF level to use, remember that an item with SPF 15 protects your skin from 93% of UV rays, while SPF 30 protects against 97%.

A powder concealer around SPF 15 to 50 will also protect your skin, as well as help your moisturizer and foundation stay on longer.

Don’t make a rookie mistake by forgetting about your lips! High gloss lipsticks with little color can actually attract UV rays to your face, so during the summer go for an opaque color instead. However, you can use a high gloss lip balm, like the Mary Kay® Sun Care Lip Protector Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 15,  because they actually reflect UV rays.

Also, you can use colored lipsticks or clear lipbalms that are SPF 15 or higher. Applying a clear gloss with SPF over your favorite lipstick is another great option for protecting your lips.

I’m Going To The Beach And Still Want To Wear My Makeup!

If you’re going out to spend hours in the sun, it’s definitely important to apply sunscreen instead of only wearing makeup. But it doesn’t hurt to wear both!

Simply apply your sunscreen to your face, and give it about ten to fifteen minutes to dry before putting your makeup on.

Remember that depending on your skin tone, sunscreen will need to be reapplied every one to two hours. Be careful, though, because applying it over your makeup can make things messy! To avoid messing up your beautiful face, use a tinted sunscreen that’s similar to your foundation color. For example, the Mary Kay® Tinted Moisturizer Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 20 protects the skin while providing a lightweight, natural color.

Bonus tip: If you plan to play in the water use waterproof sunscreens and makeup.
