Eek! Are You Making These Makeup Mistakes?

We’ve all been there.

You know your makeup is struggling to keep up with you today. It’s 90 degrees outside, you’ve been working since 5 a.m., and you’re exhausted. You’re just not looking your best. Then your friend wants to go out for drinks and take a hundred pictures to post online.

Great.

Now not only do you know your makeup is bad, everyone in the world knows it’s bad. Forever.

We’re only human, and mistakes are bound to happen. But we’re here to ensure that the days of making these makeup mistakes are long gone.

Soon, you’ll be the one saying “bring on the selfies!”

Mistake #1: Having too much makeup


Yes, there is such a thing as having too much makeup! But let me explain.

You have makeup for work, makeup for a night out, makeup for the gym, makeup for a date night in. Whew! That’s a lot of looks to prepare for. It’s no wonder your makeup bag is overflowing with products.

But when you have too much makeup, a few things can happen.

You may not use it in time, and it expires or goes out of style. Do you want to be using last season’s mascara when the Lash Intensity Mascara is calling your name?

Uh, no!

So make sure you’re buying things you can use more than once. Pare down to just the essentials. That will help you keep up with the latest in makeup trends, and you'll have room for new items.

Shopping trip, anyone?

Mistake #2: Not doing your makeup every day


You’ve heard the saying “practice makes perfect,” right? Well the same could be said about makeup!

When you get into the habit of wearing makeup everyday, you’ll be surprised at how quickly you’re able to apply it. Pretty soon the time it takes you to get ready in the morning will be cut in half, and you’ll have so much more time in your day.

You’ll also get better at figuring out what works and what doesn’t. Maybe this lip gloss doesn’t work with that eye shadow, but with a little more experimenting you can easily find the right combination.

Mistake #3: Not keeping your makeup organized


How long do you spend rummaging through your makeup looking for that one lip gloss? Be honest. It’s a long time, isn’t it?

I’m definitely guilty of throwing way too much stuff into my bag and then spending way too long digging something out. But remember how your parents used to say “do as I say, not as I do?” You probably thought you’d never have to hear that again, but I’m bringing it back!

A lack of organization not only means more time looking for what you need, it also means you’re bound to forget stuff. Maybe you took your lip gloss out and set it somewhere you wouldn’t forget. That means, of course, you’ll forget it!

This applies to your personal and professional life. Having your demo materials unorganized could make you seem less professional to your customer. It’s important to have everything in order for them, so they have a smooth transaction. If everything has its place, and you keep up with it, you’ll always have what you need handy.

Mistake #4: Using old makeup


OK, so we know we told you to stick to your essentials, but we didn’t mean to keep them forever.

If you have makeup brushes that have been there since the last time a Clinton ran for president, it’s probably time to toss it.

You’ll want to make sure you’re keeping your supplies current, clean, and bacteria-free.

Yuck, bacteria!

Mistake #5: Wearing the wrong shade


So you’ve found your Mary Kay consultant, organized your makeup bag, and thrown away old makeup. You should be all set, right? Well, sort of.

The next biggest mistake you can make with makeup is not taking the time to find the right foundation for your skin tone. Think of it this way, do you really want your face to be a completely different tone from your neck?

No way! I mean just watch this video where the men in our office did the girls makeup.

And once you’ve found the right shade, make sure you blend. BLEND, BLEND, BLEND! Blending in your foundation helps give you a beautiful and even coverage all over your face.

Mistake #6: Not having a Mary Kay Consultant

Spring Makeup Trends: Have you seen these yet?


Don’t you just love this time of year?

Other than the pollen wrecking my allergies, I love spring. Flowers are blooming, the weather is great, and it means summer is right around the corner!

It also happens to be a really busy time for Mary Kay Consultants. From proms to weddings to graduations —your customers will expect to have their makeup perfect for these occasions.

We know it can be tough to keep up with constantly changing makeup trends. But your customers are relying on you to keep them looking trendy this season.

Stressed out? Don’t be! We’re here to help!

Grab a pen, and take some notes. These are the spring trends you’ll want to know about this year.

Trend #1: All That Glitters is Gold


It feels like metallics never go out of style—although I have some clothing from 2001 that would beg to differ.

But gold, silver, copper, and chrome are back in a huge way this season! Worried you can’t pull off such bold colors? Well trust us, it’s easier than you think.

If you’re feeling up to it, a gold lipstick is a great option. It will give you the glitter you need to stand out in a crowd. But you don’t have to go quite so bold. Ease into it with the Mary Kay At Play Bold Fluid Eyeliner in Gold Metal, and your eyes will totally pop.

And if you’re feeling a little adventurous, add some glitter to your eyelids or anywhere around your eyes.

Trend #2: Keep It Natural

Now, I know it sounds crazy, but it can sometimes take a lot of work to pull off the “no makeup” look. Hollywood makeup artists have talked for years about the hours it takes to make actresses look like they have no makeup on. Ironic, right?

The key to a natural look is complementing the skin tone. Since you won’t be using bright colors, you really need to play on the natural shades and hues that are already there. You’ll want to use neutral colors that don’t stand out too much, but still brighten up the face.

Your goal is to enhance what’s already there. Focus on evening out skin, applying light and soft eye makeup, and finish with a nude lip. Or, to spice it up, try a natural look with a red lip to really make that one feature stand out.

Whew! And all this time we thought “no makeup” really meant no makeup!

Trend #3: Super Bold Eyelashes


We spend a lot of time talking about eye makeup, and there’s a reason for that—eyes are the first thing people look at when they meet you, and the thing they’ll remember most.

And although eyeliner and eyeshadow are super important, they aren’t anything if you don’t have dramatic eyelashes to flutter.

Whether it’s their prom or their wedding, your customers are going to want to stand out from the crowd. And who could blame them? Everyone wants to feel like a princess!

But nail art is a great way to get noticed!

So what if you aren’t an artist? How are you expected to create these detailed images? Trust us, it’s easier than you think!

5 Reasons People Won't Buy from You

So you’ve tried everything.

You’ve hosted parties, mastered social media, and gained confidence. But nothing is working. So what are you doing wrong?

Don’t worry. It’s not you!

Sometimes people don’t want to buy a product right that second, and there are a lot of reasons for that. But that doesn’t mean you should give up on the sale.

Just because they aren’t interested right now doesn’t mean they won’t ever be interested.

We’re here to give you some reasons that someone may not want to buy from you and give you tips on how you can still make them a future customer.

Reason #1: They don’t wear makeup


You may find someone who says “I don’t wear makeup, so why should I purchase it from you?”

Tough question, right? But don’t worry, the answer may be easier than you think.

As someone who rarely wears makeup, looking through a Mary Kay Look Book can be intimidating! As a Mary Kay Consultant, you should think of yourself as a teacher. It’s your job to teach them which products will be best for them.

And, OK, so maybe they don’t wear makeup at all. But Mary Kay also has a great line of skincare products they may be interested in. Everyone wants to improve their skin, right?

Show them what a difference makeup can make. Not just for their skin, but for their confidence.

Reason #2: They don’t trust you


We’ve talked before about building trust within your Unit, but it’s also important to build trust with your customers.

We’re talking about makeup—this is something you’ll be putting on your face every day. Would you want to buy it from someone you didn’t trust?

Think about how you’d feel if your hair stylist picked up a pair a household scissors to cut your hair. YIKES. Would you ever go back there again? I wouldn’t!

Why is that? It’s simple. You didn’t trust them to cut your hair.

Building trust with a potential customer is important. Let them know that you really know what you’re talking about. You do, after all! You know the company, you know your products, and you know how your products can help them.

Want a quick way to build trust? Identify a problem the customer has and fix it. Let’s say they have an issue with dry skin—show them the moisturizer that is going to solve that problem for them. They’ll trust you immediately!

Be passionate, be genuine, and love what you do. Trust us, that will make the sale every. single. time.

Reason #3: They can’t afford it


We’ve all been there.

Cutting costs often means cutting out nonessentials. Sadly, that sometimes means makeup gets the boot.

So what do you do when your customer tells you they can’t swing it right now?

It’s tough to sell to someone who simply can’t afford to spend a lot of money right now. And like we said before, we don’t want you to pressure them. So do you give up?

No, give them options!

Maybe your customer can’t afford a full set, but they can get one. Offer them that! Let your customers know that you’re flexible and willing to work with them. This shows that you respect them and care about building a relationship with them.

People remember things like that. Once you’ve established trust with a customer, they’ll keep coming back to you—trust us!


Reason #4: They already buy somewhere else


It’s hard to convince someone to change their routine. You can barely convince me to change what kind of oatmeal I eat in the morning! Maple brown sugar for the win!

If a potential customer always goes to one particular store and buys one particular brand, they may be hesitant to try something new.

This is your time to shine!

Show them all the ways Mary Kay can boost their confidence and help make their daily routine a lot easier.

Don’t feel like you need trash talk any other brands - let your brand speak for itself.


Reason #5: They don’t like Mary Kay products


How can they not like Mary Kay products? Are they crazy?

Well maybe they have never had someone like you around to change their mind!

Think about offering a demo or giving them some samples, so they can see for themselves how great the products are.

So what if your potential customer doesn’t want to try the products simply because they don’t like Mary Kay. There are some misconceptions about the company, so be prepared to set them straight.

When they see how passionate you are about the products and the company, it just might change their mind.

See? We weren’t kidding! There are a ton of reasons people won’t buy from you. But we hope these tips will help prepare you for any excuse a customer throws your way. All of the reasons we talked about are completely out of your control.

Want to Be a Social Media Queen? Try These 7 Tips

With so many social media platforms out there, it can be hard to keep everything straight!

But these days, your social media presence can really make or break you.

What makes it so important?

It’s simple, really!

Social media is the first impression people get of you. And, we all want to make great first impressions.

Luckily, we’ve got some tips to help you make a great first impression every single time!

#1 Have the Same Profile Picture


Have multiple social media accounts to manage?

That’s great!

But make sure that you can be easily recognized.

Your Facebook, Twitter, and any other profile should all have the same picture of you. Trust us, it helps!

When people are searching for you, it can be confusing if you have a bunch of different pictures. They may not be sure they have the right person.

When you use the same picture across all of your social media accounts, your customers will have an easier time finding you. And that’s good for you too!

#2 Narrow Your Focus


Do you want your social media profile to be used mostly for your business?

Well make sure you create a separate account from your personal one.

Why is that important?

Think of it this way.

Do you want new customers seeing pictures of your cute dogs, or info about new product releases?

I’m sure your dogs are adorable, but that’s not really the type of content your customers need to see.

#3 Limit Your Profiles


Social media is everywhere!

There are tons of social media platforms to choose from with new ones popping up every day. So choosing the right ones for your business can be tricky.

Don’t worry! We’re here to help.

There’s really no point in having 15 profiles if you’re only really using 2 or 3. And chances are your customers aren’t using that many sites either. Focus on the big ones. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest. Pick ones that you’re comfortable with using and that you’ll consistently update.

It’s also worth taking some time to figure out what social media outlets are working best for you and spend more time on those. If your users aren’t really engaging with you on Instagram, it’s okay to spend less time on that.

It doesn’t help you to have a Google+ account if it’s just gathering dust, or whatever unused social media profiles gather. Pixelated dust?

#4 Stay Positive


Always, always, always keep your content positive!

Sure, complaining is human. We all do it!

But your social media page for your business is no place for it.

It’s also not a great place for politics, current events, and other controversial topics. Remember that your customers are all different and may not always agree on things like that.

Keep in mind that the things you post affect the way people see you, and ultimately you want your unit or customers to see you as friendly and professional.

#5 Be Engaged!


Social media is not a one-way street. It’s a place for you to share and for others to share with you.

Make sure you’re engaging with your followers. Reply to messages and comments. “Like” other people’s posts.

Mary Kay is a community, and that community should exist online too.

#6 Have a Plan


Like with most things, it’s best to have a plan.

I know it sounds crazy. Plan your social media? Really?

Yes!

Have goals and know what you want.

Do you want to use social media to grow your business? Post about all the great new products Mary Kay has!

Is your goal to grow your Unit? Post more about the opportunity! Pictures of those pink Cadillacs might help!

If it’s hard for you to remember to post, we totally get it!

Interviewing a New Consultant? Watch Out for These Things!

Ugh, interviews.

Even the thought of one can make the most confident person nervous. Like, really nervous. The kind of nervous where your voice cracks and your palms sweat.

Just like taxes, interviews are something everyone has to do sometimes. And they can be a great way to get to know someone before inviting them to join your Unit.

But it’s not just the interviewee that gets nervous either.

As a Director, you have a lot of work to do. And getting ready for the interview takes a lot more than reading some sample questions from the internet.

There are a lot of things you need to watch out for. Keep reading to find out what they are!


#1 Their Attention to Detail


Mary Kay is a fast-paced business with a lot of moving parts!

To be successful, being organized and detail oriented is a MUST. And an easy way to tell whether or not your potential recruit pays attention to details is whether or not they show up on time to your meeting.

Of course, everyone is late every once in awhile, but tardiness may be a sign that they aren’t taking this opportunity seriously.

Maybe they didn’t give themselves enough time to get ready, or they got lost on the way, or any number of other excuses. The point is - they should be prepared and on time. No one likes to be kept waiting, right?


#2 Their Communication Skills


How many times did you have to reach out to this potential recruit? Once? Twice? A million?

Remember that when you’re interviewing someone to be a new Consultant, it’s not just about this one meeting. In a very short time, you’re having to decide whether or not they are going to be an asset to your Unit.

If they never answer their phone, or it takes them hours to respond, chances are their customers will have a hard time reaching them too. Ain’t nobody got time for that!


#3 Their Personality


This is key!

Like I said before, you are inviting this person into your family. Not only do you want someone who has the ability to go out and find customers, but you also want someone who is going to be able to nurture and maintain those customer relationships.

Most of all, you want someone that YOU like. You’re going to have to interact with this person a lot!

When you’re talking with them for the first time, ask yourself:

Do we get along? Are they going to be difficult to work with? A year from now, am I going to regret bringing them on?

Sure, it seems harsh, but thinking about these things in the first meeting is going to save you a lot of trouble in the future.


#4 Their Story


Okay, maybe they were running a little late, and maybe they aren’t great at answering emails, and maybe you aren’t really clicking. So, what do you do?

Can this interview be saved?

Yes it can!

Ask them to share their story.

Sounds crazy, right?

Why do they want to join Mary Kay more than any other company? What’s their motivation?

These questions can give you a way to really connect with your potential new Consultant.

Maybe they want to be able to support their family. Or drive that pink Cadillac. Or travel the world!

Whatever their motivation is, being passionate and having goals means they will likely work hard to be successful.

So there, all the things you should be watching out for during your next consultant interview.

You tell someone you are an Independent Beauty Consultant, a Director, or an NSD for Mary Kay, and what’s the response you get back in return—usually an oh my gosh, really?

And it’s mostly from people who have never even given Mary Kay a chance.

So I’ve collected the top reasons people say bad things about Mary Kay, and I’m here to prove them wrong.

Myth #1: It Costs So Much Money Just to Join Mary Kay

WRONG!

Many people out there try to say that to start up your Mary Kay business will cost you some serious cash.

That to make it in the business you have to buy so many products, which you’ll lose money on because you can’t sell them.

Insulting much?

Well, I’m calling those people out!

To start out in the Mary Kay world only costs you $100. That’s it. No other gimmick!

Myth #2: The Pink Cadillac Isn’t Really Free

While you do need to meet certain sales requirements to earn the pink Cadillac, what other company out there gives away free cars for working hard and reaching a goal?

My answer—not many!

Mary Kay gives consultants who make their sales goals a brand new, fresh-off-the-lot car—and even covers the insurance. And did we mention, it’s pink?

Big points in my book for Mary Kay!

Myth #3: Mary Kay Ash was Controlling

To the people who believe Mary Kay Ash is anything but a hard-working woman, who had a dream and turned it into reality, who helped so many women (and men) stand on their own two feet again—well, they must not know Ms. Ash very well.

Mary Kay Ash started this makeup empire with only $5,000, and she did so to support her family and bring women out of the shadows of businessmen.

And although it’s true that many of us read Mary Kay Ash quotes on a daily basis, to call Mary Kay Ash controlling just doesn’t seem like an accurate statement at all.

She created a successful business plan and shared the secret of success to everyone, and gave everyone the freedom to make their own success. Doesn’t sound too controlling to me.

Myth #4: No Time for Family

What other company allows you the ability to make your own schedule, pick your own products, schedule your own parties, and be a part of a family like Mary Kay?

Many people suggest that when you start working in Mary Kay, you lose the time you would usually have for family.

Not true!

As Mary Kay Ash would say, “God first, family second, and career third.

Family was very important to Mary Kay Ash.

Her family was the reason she started this company so that she could support her them during the wake of her husband’s declining health.  

Why would she want you to give up yours?

Myth #5: Your Ability to Sell Products Won’t Last

The myth that surrounds Mary Kay is that when you first start out, your sales will be great, but that the fire won’t last.

You’ll soon only be able to sell one or two products a month, and all of your money will be wasted.

Mary Kay gives you the freedom to sell as much or as little product as you want. What you put into Mary Kay is what you’ll get out of it.

So prove your critics wrong, and get out there and sell, sell, sell!

Myth #6: You’ll Be All on Your Own

The biggest criticism of Mary Kay is the loneliness you feel when you join. To these critics, when you join Mary Kay, you’ll be sent out to sell makeup, and that’s it.

Wrong again, critics.

Your Unit will become a part of your family. Your fellow Unit members will support you during your parties, give you tips and advice to sell more products, and be there to have fun right along side of you.

Yes, You Should be Doing This While Making a Sale

We all ask ourselves from time to time, “Am I doing this right?”

Second-guessing is a common human phenomenon, and it’s definitely one that can send us into a tizzy when we’re trying to make sales and reach our goals.

So, I’m here to silence the questions, the concerns, and the worries with one simple statement: yes, you should be doing this while making a sale!

But for those worry warts out there, here are some examples of things you should be doing when talking to a new client.

Accept the Nerves

Remember those little butterflies that you feel right before you start talking to a new client, or when you’re trying to close the sale?

Embrace them!

Yes, I want you to accept the nervousness you feel, because once you do, all those butterflies will be replaced with excitement.

And think of it this way, you’re only nervous because it's the supposed unknown. But you know your products, you know your company, and you know what you sell makes a difference in someone’s life.

So accept those little butterflies as your friend, and don’t worry about making mistakes.


Listen More, Speak Less

Most people think, “oh in sales, you gotta talk the talk.”

Well my friend, to really succeed you need to listen more than you talk.

Your clients will buy you out of your products if you can solve their problems. But to know what solutions you can provide them, you have to listen first to what they are saying.


Be Friendly

Sure it’s a professional meeting; you’re a professional, and you work for a professional company—but that doesn’t mean you have to act rigid!
