How Your Diet Affects Your Skin

You are what you eat!

Your skin truly is a reflection of your overall health. The way you eat not only affects your weight and how you feel, but there are several ways your diet affects your skin. Eating a healthy diet is an ‘inside-out” approach to having radiant skin. Here at UnitWise, we want to share a few tips to improve your complexion and understand how your diet affects your skin.

Chronic Dryness:
If you find yourself with dry and cracked skin on a constant basis put down the bottle of lotion; we need to fix this problem from the inside-out. Your body may not be getting the nutrients it needs. Moisturizing is a vital part of caring for your skin, however, eating a balanced diet is just as important. If you’re not eating enough healthy fats, your body lacks important fatty acids.

Nuts and olive oil are great examples of healthy fats that help your body absorb nutrients and keep your skin moist and supple. Also not drinking the recommended eight 8-ounce glasses of fluid a day can cause dryness.

Drinking lots of water to stay hydrated during the summer is extremely important. When you sweat, your body relies on fluids to remove toxins from your skin. Health authorities recommend 2 liters or a half a gallon of water a day. Also, keep in mind that carbonated soft drinks dehydrate you. Because they contain sugar and caffeine, it does not replace any of the fluids you are losing from sweating.

Also try avocados, unsweetened coconut milk, and fish for a great source for omega-3s.

Whether you have wrinkles or not be careful to consider how much refined “white” carbohydrates and sugars you’re eating. Yes, eventually we will all look like our parents, but luckily with healthy eating, we can put that off as long as possible!

Surprisingly many people have wrinkles caused by having low collagen production. The elasticity of your skin is determined by proteins, collagens, and elastic lying just under the surface. No matter your age sugars cause damage by eating away at the collagen in your cells. Once damaged your collagen and elastin become weak and dry causing signs of age such as wrinkles and skin sagging. So to keep those wrinkles at bay limit your intake of refined sugars.

To prevent wrinkles or help restore your skin, focus on eating foods high in protein. Fish contain omega-3 acids and high protein levels which will help your body build collagen and elastin.

Salmon and trout are fatty fish that contain high levels of omega-3s and protein.

I don't know about anyone else, but I always thought when I was an adult I would never deal with breakouts again. I was sadly mistaken. As teenagers the major culprit for acne was hormonal changes; now as adults, we need to look at our diet.

Eating a diet high in starchy foods and sugars cause your blood sugar to rise, pretty understandably. However, when your blood sugar rises inflammation occurs, and your insulin levels become irregular. The imbalance in insulin triggers certain hormones and causes breakouts.

Also, if you overwhelm your liver with too much sugar, it is unable to effectively filter all the toxins you run into during the day. As a result of toxin overload, your skin will act as a last ditch effort release it from your skin. In other words acne and breakouts.

Try replacing refined sugar and starches with fresh fruit, vegetables, and whole grains. Your body will thank you!

Try a salad made of fresh berries and kale/spinach.

Dull Complexion:
If your skin looks dull and gray even in the middle of summer, consider the following. You could be eating too many fats, and your skin literally isn’t being fed properly. Remember your skin sheds about 30,000 to 40,000 cells on a daily basis.

Eating deeply colored fruits and vegetables instead of processed foods provide you with essential nutrients. Carrots and sweet potatoes are high in vitamin-A which is needed for skin cell reproduction. Oranges, broccoli, and kale are a wonderful source of vitamin-C to produce collagen.

Brighten up your skin by sleeping 8 hours and eating foods high in Vitamin-A and Vitamin-C.

Dark Under Eye Circles:
Dark circles could be a result of stress, anxiety, and lack of sleep but also a result of adrenal exhaustion, which can be caused by your diet. An excess of caffeine, sugar, or not eating enough can cause stress in your adrenal glands.

The adrenal glands are located near your kidneys and help your body control blood sugar, blood pressure, burn fat and protein. It also serves as a sensor for illness or injury.

Another cause for dark circles can be a food allergy or sensitivity, so be sure to check with your doctor if your symptoms continue.

Try broccoli and brussels sprouts for vitamin K which help with blood coagulation and circulation.

Plenty of Fluids:
Drinking lots of water to stay hydrated during the summer is extremely important. When you sweat, your body relies on fluids to remove toxins from your skin. Health authorities recommend 2 liters or a half a gallon of water a day. Also, keep in mind that carbonated soft drinks dehydrate you. Because they contain sugar and caffeine, it does not replace any of the fluids you are losing from sweating.

Green tea is not only refreshing but also packed with antioxidants.

How To Prevent Summer Dry Skin

It’s really starting to heat up out there. You might find yourself feeling a little extra heated by the pool, at the beach, or just during your normal daily routine. As you heat up, so does your skin! Don’t suffer from irritated, dry skin all summer long, learn how to help your skin fight the dry heat.

Fighting Summer Dry Skin

The basics start with your showering techniques. Even though a hot steamy shower might be the only way to get up in the morning, your skin will thank you for turning down the heat. Hot showers actually dry your skin out, and you’ll benefit from a cooler, lukewarm shower instead.
Then while you’re in there remember to exfoliate with a gentle scrub. Over exfoliating can irritate sensitive skin, but gently exfoliating will help wash away debris like dirt, and dead skin that clogs your pores so your skin will be able to absorb more moisture.

When your skin is still moist from the shower then it’s the best time to apply hydrating moisturizer lotion. Put it all over! Also, it doesn’t have to be a once a day activity. Apply moisturizer before bed, during a nose powdering session, or at any point when your skin feels dry. You can even up your moisturizing game with a hydrating face mask or a refreshing face mist.

Don’t forget to hydrate your own body. Drink water all day long to hydrate your skin. Remember to up your water intake during the summer to beat heat causing dehydration. Also, you can liven your water up with cucumbers, lemons, and berries to add vitamins and minerals that will boost your skin.

Even though summer is the time to go out and catch some rays you have to protect your skin from the sun. Sit in the shade when you can and wear protective clothing like large hats. Also, don’t forget to apply, reapply, and reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours. You can even get some SPF lip balm to protect the sensitive skin on your lips.

Harsh chemicals in sunscreen can really dry out your skin so look for an organic brand. Other harsh chemicals that can do a number on your skin are found in bug sprays, bath bombs, and chlorine.

After being in the sun be sure to treat any possible sunburn or skin irritation as soon as possible. Sooth your skin with some aloe vera or cooling lotion and take some aspirin to reduce inflammation.

Now we know that you aren’t going to avoid the pool, and neither are we, just keep in mind that it’s best to rinse off chlorine with warm water as soon as you can after taking a dip.

When you’re cooling off inside try not to pick a seat by a blowing fan or an AC vent. As cold air whips through the room, it can dry your skin out faster than you know it. However, You could place a humidifier in the room to add moisture to the air.

Keep Cool This Summer

Don’t like irritated, itchy skin hold you back from enjoying summer activities! Keep your skin nice and hydrated for comfort all season long. Don’t hold yourself back from the pool or a day by the lake, just be prepared to protect your skin from the sun and never forget to moisturize!

Banish Acne With 3 Small Changes

Nothing can ruin your morning like waking up and discovering a brand new pimple on your face. It’s especially frustrating with age, I mean we’re not full of raging teenage hormones anymore, so what gives? Why do breakouts still happen?! If you’re plagued with pimples, blemishes, and more, don’t worry you can put an end to frustration with a few simple changes.

How To Prevent Acne

Adjust What You Eat

We aren’t suggesting that you totally alter your diet but it might be time to consider making a few healthier choices. Sugar in desserts like cookies or refined carbs like white bread can wreak havoc on skin. They cause your blood sugar to increase and more insulin is created, then, as a result, your skin produces more oil which clogs your pores, leading to acne.

Also, greasy food is not a great option for your skin either. Now we understand the irresistible urge to chow down on some pizza or fries, but these foods coat your fingers in grease, then once you touch your skin the oil is transferred, resulting in a pore clogging break out.

Instead of indulging in junk food consider healthier options full of vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants that are good for your skin. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, foods rich in healthy fats like fish, avocados, and nuts are all great options.

Another great thing to do is put down the soda for options like water and green tea. Water hydrates your skin and flushes out toxins and green tea is full of beneficial antioxidants.

Take Time To Relax

Nothing makes skin freak out like chronic stress, but most of us are stuck in go mode these days. It’s hard to catch a breath between long days at work and busy commutes, but adding some time for relaxation can really transform your skin.

Try joining a yoga class to find your inner chi or take a walk around the block. Exercising is actually a great way to relax because it releases tension from your muscles and gets your blood flowing. Then more blood and oxygen are carried to your face to create lively, energetic skin. Also, sweat cleans your pores as it passes through them!

Other ways to relax include reading a book or magazine with a glass of wine, soaking in a warm bath, or going to your favorite salon for a mani and pedi.

Up Your Skin Care Regimen

Acne is caused when pores are blocked with dead skin, excess oil, makeup, and more. You need to wash your face to remove these items. It’s very important to wash your face twice a day. Morning and night. It only takes a minute to add washing your face to your morning or getting ready for bed routine.

If you don’t wash your face at night at least remove your makeup. It only takes a few seconds to grab a wipe and rub your face down. Just remember that face wash and makeup remover can dry your face out, and dry skin blocks your pores, so moisturize right after you clean your face every time.

Also, clean the items that regularly come into contact with your face. Your hands, for example, carry grease and bacteria, so wash them often and try touching your face less. Your phone screen is another item that can transfer unwanted items to your face, so keep it clean. Your pillowcase collects grease and bacteria all night long while you sleep, so remember to wash and change your sheets often. Also, don't forget to clean your make up brushes!

Enjoy Being Acne Free

You don’t have to suffer from acne forever or pay for an expensive treatment to have clear skin. Making a few simple changes to your daily routine with healthier options, a little you time to relax, and taking a minute or two to wash your face can yield major results!

Inspirational Women To Learn From

Without Mary Kay’s inspirational hard work and determination, her company wouldn’t have progressed to what it is today. Not only has it created millions of jobs around the world, it’s given women the tools for self-confidence and success. Plus, we can all learn from Mary Kay’s values and advice. Today we’re taking the time to not only celebrate Mary Kay but to also celebrate more inspirational women who we can learn a lot from.

Inspirational Women

Amelia Earhart

Amelia Earhart always had a taste for adventure and learning as she grew up. She loved books, chemistry, and more, but nothing topped her interest in aviation. Although she was the 16th woman to receive her pilot’s license, she broke many records and achieved great things as she was the first woman to ever fly solo across the Atlantic.

She was an advisor to aeronautical engineering and a career counselor to female students at Purdue University. Also, Amelia was a member of the National Woman’s Party and an early supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment. She aspired to push herself beyond the limits and stood up for what she believed in.

Madam C.J. Walker

Sarah Breedlove, known as Madam C.J. Walker was not only the first female self-made millionaire in America, but she was the first self-made African American millionaire in America! She worked hard as a laundress barely earning about a dollar a day, working hard to afford a formal education for her daughter.

Once Walker noticed how African American women were having issues such as dandruff, baldness, and skin disorders due to the application of the harsh soaps of the time she developed her own hair and beauty products.

She went door to door selling them and teaching people how to take care of their hair and eventually opened up her own manufacturing company, salon, and beauty school to train other women. Walker created jobs for thousands of women and even became an international success.

Grace Hopper

Grace Murray Hopper or ‘Amazing Grace’ used her great mind to pave the way for computer programming. She was a rear admiral in the Navy and always was aspiring to learn. She always worked hard and even earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics as well as her master's degree and Ph.D. in mathematics from Yale.

When World War II started she tried to enlist in the Navy but she was too old at age 34, her height to weight ratio was too low, and she was actually 15 pounds below the Navy’s minimum weight of 120 pounds.

Luckily her outstanding career in mathematics was considered valuable to the war effort. Grace served on the Mark I computer programming staff and invented the first compiler for a computer programming language. Her work popularized the idea of machine-independent programming languages, which was the beginning of COBOL, the major data processing language used today.

Don’t Forget About Yourself

We believe that all women can be great with hard work and perseverance. From flying across oceans, becoming a self-made millionaire, to putting your mind to the matter, you can accomplish greatness. Never give up and follow your passions!

Your Guide To The Perfect Fake Tan

It might be time for that summer vacation or a fun day at the pool with your friends, only one problem. You totally haven’t had any time to tan. What do you do, go outdoors confidentially in your swim suit rocking a shade of pale? That’s always an option, but you could also quickly fake tan to look like the sun has been kissing your body for weeks now!

Fake Tanning Tips

Tanning Beds

In the spring it never hurts to get a membership to a tanning salon to create a nice base tan. This type of tan isn't exactly fake, but they also aren’t caused by the real sun. The thing to remember about tanning beds is to start off slow.

If you’re really pale then 5 to 10 minutes will be enough for your first few sessions. Also, if you tan in your birthday suit remember than tender skin that hasn’t seen the sunlight in a long time can burn very easily. Consider putting a little sunscreen on extra pale areas to prevent getting a sunburn.

Spray Tans

You could also go somewhere for a quick spray tan. Just remember to shave and do all of your hair removal 24 hours before your session. This gives any nicks or cuts times to close up and heal so they won’t get irritated by the tanning spray. Also, shaving or getting a wax after a spray tan could strip the color away.

Orange spots on the bottom of your feet can give a spray tan away, so either really step in puddles of spray tan on the ground to really cover your feet or cover your soles with some tape to prevent any contact with the liquid on the bottom of your feet.

Self Tanner

When it comes to self tanners keep in mind that what you pay for is what you get. To avoid looking orange go for a more expensive brand. It may even be best to research your options to find the best brand.

Also, you don’t want to pick the darkest shade of self tanner that you can find. In order to look natural only go a few shades darker than your actual skintone. If you’re so white that you actually reflect the sun, don’t worry, there are lighter shades of fake tanner that you can use.

Before applying your self tanner be sure to exfoliate all of your dead skin away so you can coat your body evenly. Then avoid putting any moisturizing products on your skin beforehand, because that will coat your skin and prevent the tanner from being fully absorbed.

However, dry areas of the skin like your elbows, knees, and heels can absorb more color and end up looking darker than the rest of your body. You can apply lotion to those areas to prevent that from happening.

Remember that your hair and eyebrows can actually absorb some of the self tanner, so coat your hairline and brows before applying it. Then put on some latex gloves to prevent your hands from turning orange and your nails from getting full of gunk.
Then apply the self tanner everywhere. Everywhere the sun hits including the back of your ears, neck, back of your knees, and more. Got a buddy to help with areas that you can’t reach or use a mitt on the end of a long scrubbing brush to reach your back.

After you remove the gloves apply self tanner to your hands with cotton balls. Be sure to get the creases in your knuckles and to include the areas between your fingers.

Then prepare for the drying phase. You can use a blow dryer to speed this process up, just remember to set the air on a cooler setting. You’ll wanna put on very loose fitting clothes for the next few hours, and before bed consider putting towels down to avoid staining the sheets. Once you wake up and shower you’ll have flawless, darker skin.

Rock That Tan

There’s still time before that day at the lake or pool party to make it look like you’ve been tanning for weeks. Just find the best option for you between the tanning bed, spray tanning, and using self tanner.
