Benefits of Using Activated Charcoal

Not too long ago when we heard the word charcoal, the first thing you thought of was barbeques. Such a dark time. Activated charcoal is the superheated and extremely porous version of the stuff your husband uses on the Fourth of July. This alleged miracle black powder has made its way in toothpaste, face masks, supplement pills, and so much more because of its supposed detoxifying super powers. But what is this miracle product and is this miracle product really all it’s made out to be?

What is Activated Charcoal?

Charcoal is essentially a form of carbon that is treated to make its particles porous. These particles act like magnets for toxins and other potentially harmful substances. They are then absorbed and swept away as the charcoal is washed away. For decades activated charcoal has been used as an antidote for overdoses of some medicines. The charcoal traps certain toxins and will prevent the body from absorbing them.

So, Is It Safe To Use Activated Charcoal?

Simply put, yes but only in limited amounts. Remember a little goes a long way since it a known absorbent and can absorb 1000 times its own mass in toxins and harmful substances so if used in high amounts can cause redness and skin irritation.

Skin Benefits of Activated Charcoal:

Activated charcoal draws out bacteria, chemicals, dirt, and other toxins from the surface of your skin, helping you achieve a flawless complexion. Charcoal can also be used to treat bug bites and irritation. This is also an excellent natural alternative to using in place of many available facial exfoliators which contain tiny plastic pellets. These plastic pellets wreak havoc upon the environment and aquatic life.

Can Charcoal Be Used As ToothPaste?

As for using activated charcoal as a teeth whitener, I have a few suggestions since I have already made this mistake. Avoid using charcoal toothpaste near bathroom grout, clothes, towels and anything else you don't want dyed black permanently. The effects are amazing and immediate however there is no proof of long term benefits.

Activated Charcoal Supplements

While activated charcoal is an amazing antitoxin and can be used for hair, skin, and teeth, there is little to no scientific proof of its effects charcoal supplements removing toxins from your body. Currently, there are no known significant health risks, but it should be remembered that supplements are regulated extremely loosely compared to drug standards by the Food and Drug Administration.

Plus, your body has a built-in filtration system also known as your kidneys and liver. There is no need to take this internet trend to far and possibly affect your health. Simply drink plenty of water and eat foods high in fiber.

No matter how many new fads come and go we here at UnitWise will always be here to help grow your business. We hope you enjoyed this informative blog on activated charcoal helpful, please share your thoughts below. We hope you have a wonderful and safe weekend. For more beauty blogs visit UnitWise.com.

How to Use Email Marketing to Grow Your MK Business

Mary Kay Director growing her business with Email Marketing

How Can Email Marketing Grow my MK Business?

As many of you already know email marketing is a great way to get your products and services in front of your audience. Being able to create an effective strategy is an essential tool for growing your business. Almost ⅓ of customers prefer to receive communication from businesses via email compared to social media and direct mail.

At UnitWise, we understand email marketing can be slightly intimidating but here we will cover some beginning tactics you can implement today!

The Ultimate Beginners Guide to Email Marketing

One advantage of email marketing is increasing your brand recognition. Now I am not only talking about Mary Kay products but your brand as *their* beauty consultant. Get your name and brand image in front of your clients more often by including your color scheme, brand graphics, and tagline in the template design of your emails. Seeing the elements of your brand will build awareness and recognition.

Use email marketing as an opportunity to send quality on-topic information and increase your credibility. This will grow trust among your target audience, making it much easier to promote/sell your products and recruit new unit members.

Here are a few of the ways to use email marketing: educate your clients/unit, expand your network, find new opportunities, save money and trees, and so much more.

Getting Started?

Determine Your Audience
So who are you sending emails to and what type of content will they be receptive to? Easy, right? Your clients! Now break your clients into targeted segments so you can create a more personalized messages.

Seriously, I can not stress this point enough! Yes, legally you can rent and purchase lists of people who have unfortunately agreed to email communications --- BUT it is never a good idea. Cough, cough …. Don’t buy email lists from a chain bridal store or anywhere else.

Here is why buying lists is a terrible idea: First and foremost this is a dirty marketing tactic because it goes against the Terms of Service for almost all email service providers. It is easier to sell to someone who knows you than it is to sell to someone who’d never met you. Since these random email lists do not know you, they likely won’t appreciate your emails and will mark them as spam.

NEVER buy or rent email lists under any circumstance!
Let’s just be honest….. The high-quality email addresses you seek are not for sale.

So right now I know a few readers are thinking “yes, I might have 500 out of 1,000 emails marked as spam but 500 are interested.” Ever heard of hard bounces? Well, this is when your emails are repeated marked as spam repeatedly in high numbers. Your bounce rates is a main factor internet service providers (ISPs) use to determine your reputation, so if you have a high number of hard bounces, it will lead to your emails not being allowed in your client’s inboxes. So please for your business's sake please only email those who have subscribed to you.

Make it easy to Unsubscribe and avoid the blacklist.

What Should My Email’s Contain?

Get Personal:
One reason I suggest splitting your clients into targeted segments is so you can create more personal messages. You don’t need to write an email for every individual recipient, but clients prefer to feel important just like you.

Call Them to Action:
As much as you want your clients to enjoy reading your emails don’t forget the end goal. You want something in return. Moreover, in your case you want them to purchase MK products from your, host parties, or join your unit.

Details, Links, and Media:
Be sure to include your contact information in each email so your clients can reach out to you with questions. Also, include links to your website and social media channels. Be sure your links are working. By double checking your links, you will be ready to receive orders or schedule appointments immediately.

10 Tips For Successful Email Marketing:

1. Your subject line should be no longer than 40 characters
2. DON’T USE ALL CAPS
3. Make your subject lines unique
4. Create coupons, blogs, or write papers on your website to attract subscribers
5. Make it easy for readers to skim content
6. Provide quality useful and timely information
7. Ask questions of your clientele
8. Keep it short and to the point. Avoid lengthy paragraphs
9. Don’t over do it. Focus on quality not quantity and frequency
10. Experiment. Run Analytics. Adjust. Repeat

Learn How to Contour and Highlight for Your Face Shape

Contouring: In my humble opinion is the most confusing of all beauty techniques. If you are anything like me, you constantly find yourself watching tutorials where women practically spackle their faces into diagonal lines, then 15 to 30 minutes later emerge looking like an entirely different person.

First off let's be clear, that is not what we are aiming for here. Today we will focus on using contouring as a tool for enhancing your natural feature and possibly cheating the ones you wish you had! Without looking like Elvira.

The Two Basic Considerations for Makeup Contouring

There are two basic things to consider when learning to contour your face. You should select your contour based on your desired look and your skin tone! As a rule, select a contour two shades darker than your overall skin tone, and a highlighter two shades lighter.

Contour Choices Based on Look

For a Bold Look: Creams
Try stick and palettes for a dramatic look.
Apply your foundation with a sponge to create a smooth even surface
Simply blend in a small amount using a sponge or brush
For a stronger look slowly build up color till you achieve your desired look

For a Polished Look: Powder
Stay away from any contouring powders with shimmer! They must be matte. Also, this is a great option if you have oily skin types.
Apply your foundation with a sponge to create a smooth even surface
Dust with translucent powder then apply the desired amount of color
Blend, blend, blend! (Use a brush, not your fingers)

For a Subtle Look: Liquid
For natural dimension try a liquid (Matte) bronzer.
Apply your foundation with a sponge to create a smooth even surface
Using your fingers press to the desired areas and lightly blend with sponge
Finish with a translucent powder

Contour Tones by Skin Tone

Contour: NO SHIMMER!!
Fair- Medium Skin--- Taupes and Grayish Browns
Dark Skin--- Warmer, Cognac Colors

Highlighter:
Fair Skin--- Champagne Tones
Light-Medium Skin---Pink Champagne Tones
Olive Skin---- Golden Tones
Dark Skin--- Terracotta Tones

Contouring for Your Face Shape

Once you have determined the look you want to achieve and picked out the correct contour for your skin tone, you will have to determine your face shape. To make the most of your individual features, you will need to know where to contour and where to highlight. Here is the breakdown of contouring for each face shape!

Diamond:

Do you have a diamond face shape?
  • Slightly pointed chin and hairline
  • Wider cheekbone structure

Where to Contour?
  • Directly below your cheekbones
  • Start at your ears and go toward the corners of your mount but stop in the middle of your cheeks.
Where to Highlight?
  • Draw an upside down triangle under your eyes
  • Along your brow bone
  • Middle of your forehead
  • Middle of your chin

Heart:

Do you have a heart face shape?
  • Chin is the smallest point of the face
  • Cheekbones are wider than hairline
  • Widow’s peak

Where to Contour?
  • Along the sides of your forehead or the temple areas, imagine the shape of a “3” along the top of your forehead (use a fine brush)
  • Start at your ears and go toward the corners of your mount but stop in the middle of your cheeks.
  • Right below your chin to soften the point (tiny amount)
Where to Highlight?
  • Draw an upside down triangle under your eyes
  • Middle of your forehead
  • Middle of your chin

Oval:

Do you have an oval face shape?
  • Forehead width is slightly wider than chin
  • Face length is about one and a half times the width
Where to Contour?
  • Along hairline
  • Sides of your forehead
  • Under ears to mid jaw line on each side
  • Start at your ears and go toward the corners of your mount but stop in the middle of your cheeks.
Where to Highlight
  • Draw an upside down triangle under your eyes

Round:

Do you have a round face shape?
  • Round cheeks
  • Equal width and length of face
Where to Contour?
  • Side of your forehead beside your temples
  • Under jawbone towards your chin to midway (Make sure you blend so you don’t have a chin strap)
  • Start at your ears and go toward the corners of your mount but stop in the middle of your cheeks.
Where to Highlight?
  • Middle of forehead
  • Middle of chin
  • Draw an upside down triangle under your eyes

Square:

Do you have a square face shape?
  • Face is as long as it is wide
  • Width of hairline and jaw are even
Where to Contour?
  • Side of your forehead beside your temples
  • Under jawbone towards your chin to midway (Make sure you blend so you don’t have a chin strap
  • Start at your ears and go toward the corners of your mount but stop in the middle of your cheeks.
Where to Highlight?
  • Middle of forehead
  • Middle of chin
  • Draw an upside down triangle under your eyes
  • Along your brow bone

The Best Wedding Beauty Trends of 2017

At long last, we can finally say goodbye to the days of corkscrew curls, gaudy fake spray tans, and overpowering eyeshadow.

As an MK consultant, it is important for you and your business to stay ahead of the curve on new makeup trends. Here are some of the most popular wedding makeup and hair trends of summer 2017.

1. The Juliet Veil

These glorious veils are simply the crowning accessory for a bride seeking vintage inspiration. The Juliet Cap Veil was popularised in the 1920s in combination with flowing gowns and oversized bouquets. The style stems from a drawing of Juliet depicted wearing a cap that fit neatly. Today we have fallen in love with the elegance and glamour of this look.

2. Fresh Face

Put down that dramatic eyeshadow! Today’s brides are looking for a more natural and dewy look. Wearing a light pink eyeshadow has miraculously worked its way back into mainstream weddings via runway. This look is a quick and simple way to nail a romantic look without tumbling into Barbie bride territory.

Natural and fresh faces have taken over the runways around the world and are spilling into mainstream weddings everywhere. Soft glowing highlighted cheekbones create an effortless style of elegance and beauty. Keep the foundations light or switch to a light stain to avoid cakiness.

3. Whimsical Braids

As most of you have noticed braids are everywhere. Whether your bride wants full on braids or individual twist they are a perfect way to create a boho chic bridal style.

After so many years of over styled and frankly dated wedding hairstyles, it’s finally time to embrace the bride's natural beauty. Create natural waves with a few flyaways for an ethereal quality.

4. Flower Crowns

If your bride dreams of a boho inspired wedding, she is in luck! This 1960s vintage look does not seem to be going out of style anytime soon. Voluminous surfer girl waves paired with flowers creates a naturally elegant look. However, remember that you should only suggest this style is it fits the bride and the location of the wedding. Beyond beautiful when pulled off correctly but disastrous when not executed correctly. If your bride plans to wear a ball gown a flower crown might not be the best option.

How to Guide for Caring for your Sensitive Skin

sensitive skin conditions/ sensitive face
We all experience good and bad days for our skin, and this is especially true if you have sensitive skin. You could be constantly plagued with redness, puffiness, itchiness, dryness, and more! Make every day a great skin day by following this guide to lifestyle habits for keeping your skin healthy and comfortable.

Excessive exposure to environmental factors like sun and wind or extreme heat or cold can irritate your sensitive skin. While some problems are caused by genetics, some people are prone to allergic reactions from certain chemicals, or substances found a variety of products.

Once you have found what is irritating your skin, you can easily care for whatever might plague your skin.

Be careful of the products you use, avoid any irritants, and cultivate good eating and lifestyle habit to keep your skin healthy and comfortable.

Choosing the Right Products:

I know this next bit of advice might be hard to hear, but most scented lotions and soap can irritate your skin. Try selecting unscented products instead. Unless specifically made for sensitive skin such as MK’s Botanical Effects® series of products.

Most laundry detergents use perfumes which can cause skin irritation. Look out for those labeled “deodorant” or “antibacterial.” You may want to consider a plant-based detergent.

Almost all deodorants and antiperspirants contain aluminum. On top of skin irritation, antiperspirants have been linked to breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Please check your labels

Avoid skin care and cosmetics containing alcohol, harsh exfoliants, acids, petrochemicals, sodium lauryl sulfate or coloring agents. Instead, use products with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients:

Instead Look for Products with:
  • White Tea
  • Green Tea
  • Aloe Vera
  • Chamomile
  • Marine Plants
  • Calendula
  • Oats
The fewer ingredients in a product, the better it is for your skin

Coconut Oil:

Opt out of lotions and try pure coconut oil as a natural moisturizer. It is full of fatty acids to help keep your skin soft and prevent dryness. It works deep in your pores to nourish from within. If you needed any more of a reason to choose this. Coconut oil can also treat conditions like dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis because of its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It can even help to repair sun damage caused by overexposure.

Apply at night on your face, arms, and legs. Wash off the coconut oil in the morning.
For a soothing bath, mix 1 cup of raw coconut oil and soak for 15 minutes and pat dry.

Exfoliate:

For all skin types exfoliating is important, it helps to remove dead cells on the surface of your skin. In turn, this speeds up the skin renewal process and improves your skin texture.

Natural Exfoliant for Sensitive Skin:

Mashed Strawberries
1 Tablespoon of Yogurt
Ground Oatmeal
  1. Combine to make a thick paste
  2. Apply paste to face and gently massage using circular motions
  3. Rinse using a washcloth soaked in cool water
  4. Apply moisturizer

Makeup:

People suffering from sensitive skin must be careful when buying and apply makeup. If you have sensitive skin, use a face powder containing few preservatives, a silicone based foundation, pencil eyeliner, and avoid using waterproof cosmetics. Plus stay away from complex anti-aging products. And remember to throw out old products and never share makeup with others.

Never sleep in your makeup. Wash your face at night with cool water.

On-the-Go Makeup Essentials for Surviving the Day

Keeping a well-stocked on-the-go makeup bag is a busy business women's best-kept secret between meeting with your unit, parties, marketing, and last minute weekend road trips, you need to be ready for anything with quick touch-ups. Here are six beauty essential to add to you on-the-go makeup bag, be prepared for anything your day has in store.

1. Oil Absorbing Sheets:

Blotting papers are an excellent way to whisk away any sweat and oil without adding more product to your face. Adding additional layers can build up over the day making your face appear cakey. Keep oil blotting sheets in your bag to quickly dab over your face to soak up any excess oil without messing up your makeup.

Pack oil absorbing sheets are a life saver during the summer but are still very useful in the winter.

2. Foundation and Concealer

Keep a light to medium coverage foundation and concealer. Most likely you will already be wearing foundation, so when you add any additional layers on top, you don’t want it to be too thick. Use the concealer for any touch ups and to freshen up your eyes. Because we all have experienced the occasional pimples, under-eye bags, and slight redness.

If you are worried about any accidental spills, try using a contact lens case, use one one side for your foundation and the other for your concealer.

4. Red or Nude Lipstick

Depending if you want a more dramatic look pack a red lipstick or for a fresher natural look select a nude lipstick. Use it for touch-ups throughout the day, or if your going out with your friends pull a superhero-like day-to-night transformation.

If you like a dramatic flare pack a small case of eyeshadow for touch ups and to add drama.

5. Perfume

Instead of carrying a full bottle of perfume opt for carrying a small sample bottle or purchase a roller ball. They are perfect for your makeup bag because they are small and you can avoid any accidental spills.

Sephora has an amazing selection of rollerball perfume and they offer free samples before you buy.

6. Dry Shampoo:

Over the day your hair can get flat and oily so be sure to pack a mini version of your favorite dry shampoo. Personally, my favorite is the original Batiste. Hold the bottle about 10 -12 inches from your root. Separate your hair into two-inch sections and spritz lightly. If you haven’t used dry shampoo before, don’t be put off by the white powder simply blend it in by working your fingers through your hair. Lastly, use a hair brush to help work the formula into your hair give you that polished look.

Also, consider packing a miniature bottle of hairspray.

We here at UnitWise hope you have enjoyed these tips for your on-the-go beauty bag. For more beauty blogs, please visit UnitWise.comhttp://blog.unitwise.com/ and please share what beauty essentials you have in your makeup travel bag in the comment section below.
