What Is “Maskne” and How Can You Avoid It?
Due to the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic, face masks have become a part of daily life. Some cities are even mandating that citizens wear a face covering anytime they leave their home.
There are many benefits to wearing a face covering in public. Masks provide protection for both the wearer and people in their vicinity.
However, wearing a mask all day can be challenging for your skin. The concept of “maskne” has been all over social media lately! These mask related break-outs are becoming a struggle for many Americans, especially essential workers who wear masks for 8 hours or more each day.
Here are some tips for preventing and treating your mask-related breakouts! So next time you’re catching up with your clients, be sure to bring the wisdom!
Keep Your Make-up Light
If you are experiencing irritated skin due to constant mask-wearing, make sure you are keeping your foundation light. Heavy, full coverage products can dry out your skin and clog your pores.
Wearing a tinted moisturizer, BB cream, or CC cream is a great option. These will provide you with light coverage that won’t clog your pores, but you won’t feel like you are going make-up free either. If you want a more full-coverage look above your mask, you can layer your concealer to create this effect.
Be sure that you don’t skimp on your SPF! This is still an incredibly important part of your make-up routine, even if part of your face is covered!
Choose Your Mask Wisely
When choosing your mask, be sure to check out the materials that it is made from. Choose a cotton blend over a heavy polyester or vinyl blend. This will ensure that your mask is breathable and reduces the chance of skin irritation.
Keep Your Mask Clean
You wouldn’t wash your face with the same towel for several days in a row, the same should be true for your mask. Be sure to handwash your mask using a soap that is gentle enough for your face. If you are short on time and want to throw your mask in the washing machine, just make sure that you are using a gentle detergent that is free of irritants.
The CDC recommends that you wash your mask in hot water. They also recommend that you either air dry your masks or dry them on the warmest setting of your dryer.

Dry Skin? Add Moisture!
For those of us with dry skin, wearing a mask all day can add to the dryness. It is important to use a moisturizer with enough hydrating ingredients to combat this. For example, try a moisturizer that contains Hyaluronic Acid. This ingredient is known for helping your skin retain moisture.
Dry skin and dull skin go hand in hand. Introducing a Vitamin C serum to your skincare regimen could be a game changer. Not only is Vitamin C naturally hydrating, but it is brightening and soothing!
Make sure that you are cleansing your skin before and after wearing your mask
Oily Skin? Cleanse Often!
With oily skin, your first instinct may be to eliminate your moisturizer. This is not the answer, just make sure that you are using a light-weight product. This will keep your skin balanced without feeling greasy.
Cleansing your skin is the best way to ward off “maskne”. Cleanse your skin before you put your mask on and immediately when you take it off. If you are experiencing breakouts, make sure to choose a cleanser that has Salicylic Acid. This ingredient promotes the shedding of dead skin and the treating of redness and inflammation.
Don’t forget to exfoliate your face regularly to ensure that dead skin cells are being removed from your face. This will lessen the chances of clogged pores and breakouts!
