Tips For Combating Pandemic Fatigue and Stress

Life is stressful, there’s no question about it! However, life in the midst of a pandemic brings with it a whole new level of stress. As you know, stress has so many negative effects. It can affect our physical health and our mental health.

No one can reach their full potential when being weighed down by stress, so here are some tips to understanding and conquering “pandemic fatigue”.

What is pandemic fatigue?

According to researchers from UCLA, pandemic fatigue is defined as heightened feelings of fear, anxiety, loneliness, and hopelessness that lead to exhaustion. With all that is going on in the world around us, it’s no surprise that we are experiencing these symptoms. We are worried about getting sick and not being able to keep up with our work and family responsibilities. We are also concerned about our loved ones. Everyone feels helpless to predict the future.

How to address fatigue

The first step to alleviating this fatigue is to acknowledge it and be kind to yourself. These feelings can be disheartening, but they are normal, given the current circumstances. This feeling of burnout is common, so there is no need to be frustrated with yourself or those around you for feeling this way. Try to make time for yourself and the activities that you find relaxing and enjoyable.

Here are some other helpful tips for lowering burnout and stress.

Stick to your sleep schedule

Spending more time at home can throw off your sleeping pattern. Sleep is critical for your body and mind to regenerate and rest. If your sleep schedule is erratic or suffering, this will only add to your exhaustion.

Maintain a healthy diet

Maintaining a healthy diet will help reduce your fatigue. Plus, experimenting with new healthy recipes can be an energizing task that will take your mind off your worries.

Get some exercise

Keeping an exercise routine is difficult if you are unable to get to the gym. It is especially difficult if you are feeling tired more frequently. Find a physical activity that you enjoy, such as going for a walk each day. Yoga is a great outlet for providing stress relief and gentle physical activity.

Shut off the news

It’s important to stay up to date with what is happening in the world, especially at a time like this. However, after hours of information overload, it is alright to shut off the news and give yourself a certain amount of time to take a mental break. Psychology Today refers to this as, “clearing away emotional debris in your mind so that you can feel better”.

Stay engaged with others

One of the main causes of pandemic fatigue is loneliness. While it is sometimes easy to keep our thoughts bottled up and hide our anxiety from others, you should fight this urge. Stay in touch with your friends and family and take time to feel close to them. We can make meaningful connections and memories together, despite this difficult time.
