How-to Tuesday: a Beginner’s Guide to Blogging with UnitWise

How-To Tuesday: blogging

Why Start a Blog?

How do you communicate information with your team and customers? Social media and email marketing are both great ways to connect with your customers and keep your team updated. However, if you do not have a blog connected to your Mary Kay business, you may want to reconsider.

Starting your own blog can seem like a daunting task. After all, how does one even start a blog? Once it’s up and running, what will you write about? On this “How-to Tuesday,” we’re going to show you how you can start a blog with your UnitWise account.

How to Start a Blog

Before setting up your blog in your UnitWise account, you may want to ask yourself a few questions:

1. What is your “why?”

To put it simply: why are you writing? It’s important to identify the reason for your blog before you begin writing. This will provide your blog with a direction so that it remains relevant and relatable to your audience. A strong sense of direction will make coming up with blog entries easier once you start writing.

2. Who are you writing for?

You can't provide your audience with relevant and relatable content if you don’t know who your audience is. Identify who this blog is for before you begin writing.

Is it intended to bring in new leads and customers? Or are you trying to keep your current customers coming back? Maybe you’re looking for a new way to keep your unit motivated. These are all great reasons to begin a blog and will help you identify who you want your audience to be.

3. When will you write and how often?

No matter what content you are creating, whether you are posting on social media, sending out emails, or publishing blogs, you want to be consistent with when and the frequency by which you will be posting. This doesn’t necessarily mean you need a content calendar (although that may be helpful), but you should at least have a rough estimate of how many blogs you intend to write each month.

If you’re worried you don’t have the time to be consistent, start off slow. If you can only publish two blogs within your first month, don’t worry! The important thing is that you’ve started and now you have a foundation to work off of.

Even if you’re only posting bi-monthly, try to be consistent with when you are posting. For example, if you decide to post weekly, try to post on the same day each week. If your audience notices you post a blog every Monday afternoon, they’ll begin expecting your post.

Publish a Blog Post

To add a blog post, you can either click “Add Post” or click “New Post” within your Blog Dashboard.

create a blog

Give your new post a title and a body. Within the body of your post, you are able to paste from Word and paste as plain text. You also have the option to change the font and color of your text. Personalize your blog post by adding images, tables, and emojis to the body of your text.

At the bottom of your post, UnitWise will automatically generate a “slug” based on the title of your blog. This is the part of the web page’s address that appears after the domain name. For example, if your website’s address is “www.yourname.com” and the title of your blog is “MK Spring Release,” your slug will also be “MK Spring Release,” resulting in a web address of: www.yourname.com/MK/spring/release.

blog categories

When you post a blog, you have the option to choose a category, post tags, and choose whether your audience can or cannot leave comments.

Add or Remove Categories

When posting a blog, you can attach multiple categories to your post. This affects how your blogs will be organized within your blog dashboard but also impacts how blog posts appear on your website.

Your blog categories are listed to the right under the “Blog” tab on your website. Visitors can toggle back and forth between different categories. Blog posts will appear under their designated categories.

Adding categories to your blog is an easy way to stay organized. You can add a new category at any time. To help you save time, your UnitWise account will come with a few categories already listed. These categories include family, inspiration, marketing, leadership, and more!

manage blog categories

You can add, edit, or remove categories at any time by clicking “Add New Category” or by using the action icons listed to the right.

The best way to manage your blog is by updating your “Blog Settings:”
