My very first career conference 21 years ago had Mary Kay as the prized-speaker.  In one of her speeches she talked about delegating tasks that don't help you reach your goal or are not in alignment with your families goals, like cleaning the house. So I came home and even though I wasn't making much mk money and CJ was earning poverty pay...I decided that our 1000 sq ft home needed someone else to clean so I could focus on family and MK.  I had a makeover that week with a woman wanting mk but couldn't afford it. So for $5 an hour she cleaned my house. $10 later my house was clean and we traded product for cleaning.  I have had a cleaning lady ever since...21 years.  My husband thought I was crazy.  We didn't have the money and we didn't have a house big enough.  But I understood that sometimes you need to make a short term sacrifice to get where you WANT to be not where you ARE right now.
 
Take a look at your days and what is eating up your time?  You have the same hours in a day as me, Dacia or even Gloria Banks.  Could you find somethings to delegate to others so that you can do what will take you to achieving your dreams.  You see, cleaning the house wasn't going to get me the Mary Kay Car...that I did earn 9 months later.  But having a clean house was important.  Being the one to clean it, didn't make me a better mom...having the time to spend with my children was important.  Having a safe car to drive was important.  PLUS I calculated a few years ago that the money saved for driving a MK car for the past 20 years is paying for both kids to go to college without debt!!  Was it worth the short-term sacrifice...you bet!!

Web Based Software vs. Desktop Software

Which software platform is better for you?
Web based vs. Desktop has been a topic of debate for a while now.  Only you as a user can choose a clear winner since you are the one that has to live and work with the decision.  There are several key factors to keep in mind when making the decision.
Data Access
The key question is where do you want to be able to access your data?  Do you like to do your work outside of the office at times, and would you like to be able to simply see your schedule quickly from anywhere?
The desktop version of software might be your better choice if you don’t care about seeing your data outside of your office. In addition, if you are worried about connectivity, or simply don’t have an internet connection, this may be another reason to purchase a desktop system.
Maintenance and Upgrades
With a web based software application, you will have access to the most recent upgrade to the software without having to do a thing.  Web based applications can be updated from the central server often adding features you find the next time you log into your application.
With desktop applications, owners of the software will need to do an upgrade to the software on their time, and typically with their own resources.  Some companies may offer support to help with upgrade, but you may be charged for that service.  
Security Risks
There are risks involved when dealing  with an online version or a desktop version, so it is simply a matter of which risk you consider greater. Working online, presents security risks that are prepared for by the host company such as firewalls, 256 bit encryption and other network security measures.  However, since this is their business, most have much stronger security than you may have at your home or office.
As the host of your own application on your own computer, you can run the risk of someone hacking through your firewall or simple stealing your computer.  You also have the risk of your computer crashing and you losing the information on it if it has not been backed up recently or correctly.
Cost
Over a long period of time, web applications may be more costly than desktop applications.  It may depend on licensing fees or annual support fees.  However, the key difference is not having to come up with an up front cost.  So depending on your situation, it may be much easier to pay a small subscription fee each month than to pay a large fee to start.
Upgrades and features may also be a part of the cost decision.  If you have a desktop version and need to maintain the data, do the back up, conduct the upgrades, that may take more time than you are willing to give. You may be losing out on revenue by not being in front of your customers due to having to spend time on your home based desktop system.  A web based system is there and ready with upgrades and potentially different features that can provide cost savings over time.
Speed
Using the web for applications and the internet to transfer the data rather than a computer’s local hard drive, may operate slower. If you are using a mobile device like a web enabled phone, or an iPad, this information can be accessed in seconds vs. having to start up your computer and open a program…if you are even near your computer at the time.
Backups  and Data Storage
This may be one of the biggest debates in the web based vs. desktop discussion.  Where is your data and how is it stored?  With a desktop application, your data is stored by you.  That means you need to back it up, know how to access it, and also know how to secure it properly.  Because it is hosted by you, you have the ultimate responsibility for the security.
Just because you back up your data on a jump drive, and or keep it on a different hard drive, doesn’t mean it is secure.  Is the data encrypted, do you keep the data in the same place as your computer, so if there were a physical disaster, all of it will still be destroyed?  These are just a couple of questions to ask.
In a web hosted environment, the hosting company not only holds the data in redundant form (multiple servers), but also backs it up, and then stores it in multiple locations so there is always data there to retrieve.  Many hosts use co-located server farms that are hundreds or thousands of miles apart in case of a physical disaster.  From an up-time perspective, most hosts will guarantee up to a 99.9% capability.
   These are just the key factors to think about when determining which software platform is best suited for you.

So much is available on Intouch-check it out. www.marykayintouch.com  Foundation Survey.  Placemat...I am putting this in my reorder bags now.   So here's a tweak on my first booking idea...

Prep: print off Foundation Survey on cardstock.  Put goodie bags together with another sample you have in-stock with your business card...I am going to use the Lip Gloss or Liquid Lip or mascara samplers. If you went to Houston then you already have the Shade Finder card.  If not...do you have the old one until the new one arrives?  She won't know the difference.

Approach:  "excuse me, I couldn't help but notice how sharp you look.  I'm Julie with Mary Kay and I've been asked by MK to test market our new foundations.  Did you know 9 out of 10 women feel like they are wearing the wrong foundation?  MK just launched two new liquid foundations to partner with our Mineral Powder and 3 other formulas.  If you are willing to give me your opinion, I would like to quickly color match your hand and send you the right formula and hopefully the right color...of course, the face is the best to match but for now we will use your hand.  All I need is for you to compete this survey, try the foundation when it arrives in the mail and then call me to answer a few questions. Ok? In the meantime, here is a sample of our Ultimate Mascara/Lipgloss and when I call, I'd love to get your opnion of this popular product too."  and give her the survey as you say ok so she won't say no.

I am using the hand even though it's not the best color for her face because I am not comfortable color matching her face that may have on makeup or her neck/chest in public.   NOW WATCH THIS...while she is filling out the survey, I am going to make it a booking.  Then when I call to profile her, I will turn it into a party!!!  I won't talk party yet because I don't want to overwhelm her.  I want her face booked first.

"You know Karen, the best way to truly test the foundation is on your face.  I offer free makeover consultations that are fun and pampering.  Is there any reason why we couldn't meet in person this week or next instead of mailing the sample to you?  On Tuesday and Thursday evenings, we need models at our Pink Studio...are you free tomorrow night at 7?"

Change is never easy but in business, it's imperative. Mary Kay would say, "if your not changing then your going backwards." The fashion industry changes quarterly. Research is always finding new ingredients for better results. To be competitive in cosmetics then change MUST HAPPEN.

Dealing with it...
1 Inventory- call clients if they order what's going out to get stocked up. Buy one get one sale moves more products  faster. Put funds aside to stock new.
2 Clients- this is an op to call them all. Thank you MK.  Book them for refresher makeovers. Book Foundation parties. Have an open house. You are the Consultant...be confident in the change and they will get excited too.
3 Acceptance- you can't stop the change so assume the company has our best interest at heart and embrace it. Grumbling only hurts your business and deters your clients.
I am wearing the new primer and applied the new Matte Wear with a brush for the first time and I want to ditch my beloved Medium already!  Always try new items for a week then go back to old stuff ...that will sell you!

Get your Year in Gear!

Steps for stepping it up!
1- MAKE A LIST OF EVERYONE YOU KNOW...go through your cell phone and facebook.  Write down men and women, offices, doctors, etc.  Then as you write a name...think of who they know.  Example, Albert has a mom, daughter, wife and sister.  Dr Anderson's office has nurses and he has a wife and daughter. etc.  Use a spiral notebook and leave a line per entry to track your attempts and conversations.  This book will last your through 2011, I bet.
2- CHECK YOUR DATEBOOK...know when you are available to hold appts.  Block 3 hours for party and 1.5 for makeovers.  What about your training night and other events in your area this month?  Note them all before you make calls so you have option ABC to offer her.
3- WRITE AND PRACTICE YOUR SCRIPTS...what are you offering for Hostesses in January?  What are you featuring as your Party of the Month...New Year New Looks?  Write a script and call someone to roll play at least once then start dialing for dollars.
4- CHECK YOUR INVENTORY... did you sell off too much in December without restocking?  Do you have the new products to show like the awesome Cream Eye Color?  Place an order to be ready for all your sales which equal profits.

Happy New Year!

Isn’t it nice to feel that sense of “ahhhh”?  A new year is here and we can start over and celebrate the successes of the year past and look ahead at how we would like things to unfold in the new year.  Last week I shared how you have to take a physical inventory count and you’ve made updates to your ideal product counts as well.

Another thing you will want to do is take a picture with your cell phone or digital camera of your ending odometer reading on your car.  This will give you either a way to know exactly how many miles you put on your car in 2010 and you’re trip logs will help you know how much of that were business deductible miles or you’ll have snapshot ready for 2011.

When you visit the Accounts page on your Dashboard be sure to update any accounts and balances and be sure all of your expenses are entered here.  If you weren’t doing this all along last year, it may take more time. However, going forward set up a system that works so you’re not overwhelmed at the end of year.  Eg. Once per month or once per quarter enter your business receipts so you’re always up to date.   

Here’s some helpful reports to print out at the end of the year. These can all be found under the Home tab.  First, in the Accounts category print the Profit & Loss report.  Under the Products category, print out the Annual Product Purchases report. And lastly in the Sales category print out the Annual Summary of Expenses, Annual Summary of Income. Don’t worry, when you actually filing your taxes these reports will still be there, however, at this time you want to be sure they are accurate before you start inputting any new data for 2011.
