UnitWise Celebrates: Memorial Day

The UnitWise Heroes would like to share some interesting Memorial Day trivia with you that you can share with your family and friends:

- Army General John Logan was credited for starting Memorial Day on May 5, 1868. He originally set it to be observed on May 30th of each year. It was not until 1971 we began recognizing Memorial Day on the last Monday in May.

- In December 2000, Congress passed a law requiring Americans to pause at 3 p.m.  local time on Memorial Day to remember and honor the fallen.

- In 1966, Congress unanimously passed a resolution to officially recognize Waterloo as the birthplace of Memorial Day.

-The commemorative tradition at the famous, Arlington National Cemetery, began in the latter years of 1950. Twelve hundred of today's military soldiers place flags on over 260,000 graves the Thursday before Memorial Day. It is then guarded 24 hours a day during the Memorial Day weekend to ensure that the flags remain standing. The national cemetery is located in Arlington, Virginia across the Potomac River from our nation's capital, Washington D.C.

- On May 30, 1868, President Ulysses S. Grant presided over the very first Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.

- The World War I poem "In Flanders Fields," by John McCrea, inspired the custom of wearing red artificial poppies on Memorial Day. In 1915, a Georgia teacher and volunteer war worker named Moina Michael began a campaign to make the poppy a symbol of tribute to veterans and for "keeping the faith with all who died." The sale of poppies has supported the work of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

On a different note...

- Memorial Day is considered the Black Friday of Summer.

- Memorial Day is also an official start of BBQ or cookout season.

On this day, American's from sea to shining sea will be honoring the brave men and women who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. The entire UnitWise team would like to extend their gratitude and appreciation for our military by saying - For all who gave everything, you are forever remembered in our hearts, and we thank you on this day - Memorial Day

It's A Coffee Date: Tips To Build Your Team

tips to build your teamIf you are working to build your team and booking coffee dates, the UnitWise Heroes have some great tips to help you reach your goals and help your business succeed. All you need is a great look, topped with a positive attitude, and a sprinkle of charisma.

Dress To Impress:
You only have one chance to make a lasting impression on your future-team-member. Your overall presentation should reflect the class and glamour of your business that you have worked so hard to build. Show your future-team-member the passion you have for what you do, and that starts when they first see you. (And it gives you a chance to rock that new spring skirt and heels you just bought ;)

What To Pack For Success:
So you have planned out your fabulous outfit with spring accessories, now you need to pack for success. All your information sheets should be neatly organized, a binder or folder works best. You can even customize a binder for that little extra glam when pulling it out of your bag. Remember the little things always count.
  • Director Tip:  Have your information sheets laminated so they look very professional and they are protected from tearing and crinkling.
In your binder, organize your sheets in the order you want to discuss them, that way your coffee date will flow smoothly. Remember to ask if they have any questions in between sections as you go over them. Also in your binder, have a few business cards and coupons/gift cards. (Just in-case they may not want to be a team member, they can be a wonderful client.) If you have any flyers, while you're out and about you can hang them up to expand your business.

Along with your binder and information sheets, it's a great idea to pack a gift bag including: a beauty book, printed versions of your information sheets for them to take home, your business card, and possibly a gift or samples. A great gift idea would be to include a copy of the MK Biography.

Going that extra mile to 'dress to impress' and having all your business information neat & organized gives you a polished presentation. And when your just out on the town for a day of fun, remember to pack a few beauty books with your information and a sample or coupon to hand out. You never know who could be your next client or newest team member.

How To: Instagram for Business

Our favorite Social Media Manager - Melody Juarez interviewed real life UnitWise Hero - Zoe Irizarry for the scoop on how Instagram can be used for your business. It's not just for duck-faced selfies and candid images anymore.

Lights, Camera, Action....
Melody (left) laughing at Zoe's (right)
"Insta-game" comment
Melody - So why did UnitWise decide to venture into the crazy world of Instagram?

Zoe - Don't you mean Insta-game? lol. Well, we wanted to give our followers and customers a chance to meet The Famous Heroes of UnitWise. We are always following the latest beauty trends and trying new techniques and want everything we learn with our UnitWise family.

Melody - What should followers expect to learn from UnitWise Insta-game (as you call it ;)?

Zoe - Followers will get to see a different side of the UnitWise team through our Instagram page. They'll learn about our office environment and some of our favorite things. We'll post videos and photos ranging in many different topics. Some will even give our followers a behind the scenes glimpse of everyday life as a UnitWise Hero, others will feature make up tips or trends we are loving. We really just want to show our followers who the UnitWise Heroes are and offer tips to help their businesses grow.

Melody - Any tips for MK Directors & Consultants who want to start their own Instagram?

Zoe - Great question! We'd suggest getting involved in the daily hashtags, such as #transformationtuesday or [our favorite] #throwbackthursday. Daily hashtags are fun ways to connect with followers and instantly be accepted into the Instagram community. Our tip is to take unique photos that will attract the attention of users, but also set yourself apart with unique captions. Also, try making your posts interactive, asking your followers to comment with a certain hashtag or answer a question you have in your post.

Zoe's fresh faced look for the day. So fancy, right?
This picture is definitely Instagram worthy
Melody - What advice would you give them if they wanted to start making their own Instagram videos?

Zoe - I love posting Instagram videos because they don't have to be perfect. They can only be 15 seconds, so make them fun and exciting! You can show your followers your favorite new products or a clip of a catchy song you heard live at a concert last night [where your MK makeup didn't smudge at all]. Or post a quick video of your favorite makeup technique, for example - the best way apply bronzer.

Melody - How can Instagram help a MK business?

Zoe - There are so many ways, where do I start? If you're having a sale or trying to build your team, you can post a photo or video and ask followers to comment for a special deal. You can interact with followers and ask them to re-post your photo/video to be entered for a chance to win a special gift or receive a discount. One of the many great things about Instagram is that it's mobile. So when you're at a party, take fun shots of the attendees playing a game (or before & after pictures) and post it for all your followers to see and enjoy. And don't forget when you get your Career Car, share it with your followers and tell them how you achieved that goal. Instagram is like a never ending scrapbook, the possibilities are endless!

Melody - For the final question, how can MK Directors & Consultants join Instagram?

Zoe - Joining Instagram are very simple. You can download the app on your smart phone/tablet from the App Store or Google Play. And the best part is, it's completely free. Once it is downloaded, just select the app and start creating your Instagram profile. It's that easy.

Zoe had some great tips for Instagram, now it's time to start posting. Once you sign up, make UnitWise your first follow and see what the Heroes have been up to.

Party Tips for Mother's Day

Did you know that this Sunday marks the 100th anniversary of Mother’s Day in America?

Anna Jarvis conceived the concept of Mother’s Day in 1908 as a way to honor mothers for the sacrifices they made for their children. By 1912, many towns, states and even churches had adopted Mother’s Day and Anna Jarvis established the Mother’s Day International Association to promote her cause. Finally in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure officially establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.

Now that you know a little Mother's Day History, let's dive into party ideas...

It's a lot of fun planning Mother & Daughter parties. You can do a Tea Party, or a Daughter-Does-My-Makeup Party, or even ( UnitWise favorite) a Makeover Party. Whatever your plans are here are a few ideas from the Heroes to make Mother's Day extra special:

Daughter Does My Makeup Tag or My Mom Does My Makeup Tag
You can teach young ladies the art of makeup application and incorporate trending social media hashtags/tags at the same time. For a fun YouTube Video you can get with your daughter and let her do your makeup or vice versa and add the "Daughter Does My Makeup Tag" for your title (and use the hashtag: #daughterdoesmymakeup) when you post.

Before-&-Afters are among the Heroes favorite pictures to see on social media. If you are at a party or just want to do something fun with your mom or daughter, you can let them do your makeover with fun colors and try creative looks. This would be a perfect opportunity to experiment with the new gel eyeliner and get that trending cat eye look. When finished, showcase your Mother's Day Makeovers on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram (Check out what we have been up too).

Mother's Day Decor
Make your party POP with bright colors. You can easily incorporate the MK AtPlay colors into your decor to introduce the line to guests. photo credit: Pinterest: catchmyparty.

If bright and bold isn't your cup of tea, a sweet country chic theme may suit your clients better. I love the look of white and creams with subtle pops of color. photo credit: Pinterest: catchmyparty

UnitWise Heroes Spring Favorites

This Spring has been blooming with great colors. Corals, orchids, and pastel hues are big favorites this season. With Summer right around the corner...let's see what the UnitWise Heroes have been loving this Spring...

MK CC Cream:
This product is Elena's favorite for Spring. It provides the perfect amount of coverage and is light for the warmer weather. If you have ever used a BB cream, this is MK answer to it. Essentially it is a moisturizer and foundation all in one. For those of us who are not a big fan of wearing heavy foundation, this stuff is amazing. Just a little dab of this CC cream and you look finished and ready to go. photo credit: marykay.com

MK Nail Color:

Zoe's favorites are the new Spring nail polishes. MK doesn't always have nail polish, so these hot favs are a limited edition product. The Carefree Coral is a huge favorite this Spring. The Lemon Parfait is really fun for those sunny days. It's great to pair these two colors together by using the Lemon Parfait as an accent color on your ring fingers. The brightness just pops and the combination is a citrus burst. photo credit: marykay.com

MK at Play - Lip Crayon:
Yasmine loves the easy wear of MK's lip crayons. This new colorful line from MK is popping up in beauty magazines all over the place. An instant favorite were the Lip Crayons. They come in great colors and are light & easy to wear. You can just throw them in your lipstick pouch for quick use throughout the day. And it comes in a coral shade - Coral Me Crazy. It's bright and fresh , but not in-your-face over the top. Love this! photo credit: marykay.com

MK Eye Primer:
Brittany's eye makeup stays in place all day, thanks to her Spring favorite - MK's Eye Primer. There are a lot of eye primers out there, but not many that actually work. This little tube of amazingness packs a mighty punch of staying power. I have always had problems with keeping shadow to stay put, especially in the warmer weather, but with this stuff my shadow doesn't budge. The product glides on your eyelids before you put on your eye makeup, and primes your eyelid for your "paint" or shadow. It doesn't take much at all, so it will last for quite a while. photo credit: marykay.com

MK TimeWise Day Solution:
Every Hero is loving this lotion. This product is part of a set, but out of the two the Day Solution is my favorite. It is light weight with the perfect amount of sun protection. I love how it illuminates the skin and has this scent that reminds me of the beach. Every time I put it on my skin, I just think of laying on the beach with my toes in the sand. This product is a necessity for the Southern Sun. photo credit: marykay.com

Why UnitWise? Let's Talk Tracking Your Inventory

Products in your inventory are used for more reasons than just selling to your customers. You use products for demos, donations, personal use, gifts, etc. but how are you tracking those products as they leave your inventory? UnitWise.com has a special tracking feature just for this situation. It is very important to track your inventory when it is used for:

Demo Products
Demo products are the Section 1 products that you would use for your skin care classes and appointments. This does not include Section 2 samples. Double check with your accountant, since this may be considered a Business Expense.

Personal Use
Love MK products? Most likely you are the biggest fan and your bathroom vanity is covered (unless you use the Roll-Up bag) with MK products. When you remove these products from your inventory you want to properly document them, so your on-hand product count is always correct.

Gifts/Giveaways
Did you have an awesome party and want to reward your great hostess with an actual gifted product? You can keep track of that too. This may also be a business expense. This does not include Gifts with Purchase products.

Charities/Donation
If you had a great time visiting a charity organization and donated a portion of your inventory to a good cause, be sure to record that when you get home in UnitWise.

Expired Products
MK continuously updates and improves its product lines, it is important to adhere to the expiration date guidelines to offer best quality products to your customers, these products should be properly discarded, but also recorded in UnitWise to be removed from your inventory.

Here’s a peek at how it all works:
1.) Create a customer: Customers>Customer Center>Add New>Customer>Add Customer Name, Personal Use for example> Save. You can create as many customers like that as needed to give you more detailed tracking. Consult with your tax professional first. In some areas items that are used as personal use can be considered a business expense as long as they are visible to the eye (Mascara, eye shadow, lipstick) so you may be advised to track visible and invisible products (moisturizer, sunscreen) separately from visible once.

2.) Open this new customer profile, go to “Other Info” tab and add a “Default Discount” 50% and choose custom tax rate to be zero. In this blog we mention 50% discount in a sense that you would be tracking your wholesale cost, however your tax professional may have a different opinion.

3.) You can create an invoice for any product removed from the shelf at the specified discount, and no tax. No need to post a payment to this invoice, since it is there for tracking purposes only. It is best to create individual invoices for products as you remove them from your inventory vs. maintaining same invoice and just updating it all year long. That way you can show the exact date when that product was removed, if need arises.

4.) Anytime you need to see the total cost of products removed from your inventory, you may use the Sales Breakdown report: Home>Reports>Sales>Sales Breakdown>Choose Time Period>Run Report.

5.) At tax time, Sales Breakdown report for the calendar year include both your customer sales and your personal use/demo/charities products, so be sure to let your tax professional know about that. Also provide him/her with the individual report for each tracking customer (Personal Use, Demo, Charities, Gifts, etc.)

UnitWise makes it easy to keep track of all your inventory. For more information on how UnitWise can help you succeed contact one of our Support Heroes Today via phone: 704.234.6006 or email: heroes@unitwise.com
