How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes

As a Mary Kay Director or Consultant, it is important to protect your investments! One way to do this is by protecting and properly caring for your brushes. According to dermatologists makeup brushes should be thoroughly cleaned on a weekly basis at the very least to prevent bacteria from building up. Teach your clients and unit members how to properly clean makeup brushes.

How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes

How Often Should I Clean My Brushes?

At the very least you should clean your makeup tools once a week to prevent buildup. Because these brushes are used on the face, the cleaner, the better. Brushes used near eyes should be cleaned daily, and this is non-negotiable.

Cleaning your Mary Kay makeup brushes really can extend the lives of the bristles and make for a better application. The hairs on your brush and sponge applicants are porous so they hold on to oils and debris if the tool is dirty the application will be spotty and difficult to blend.

What Should I Use to Clean My Brushes?

The best method for cleaning your makeup brushes requires only a little water and soap. I highly suggest using the Mary Kay® Brush Cleaner. It helps to condition the bristles and protect your investment. After cleaning, the brushes feel new and perform like new.

How Do I Clean My Brushes?

Follow these simple steps to ensure your brushes are clean and feel good as new.

  1. Wet brushes with warm water (NOT hot)
  2. Use 1 to 3 sprays of Mary Kay’s brush cleaner or a drop of soap in the palm of your hand
  3. Gently massage the bristles in your palm using a clockwise motion
  4. Rinse the bristles
  5. Using a clean towel squeeze out any excess water
  6. Let your brushes dry with the bristles hanging off the edge of the counter so they can dry in the correct shape.
Never EVER let your Mary Kay brushes dry on a towel! This will cause your bristles to be mildewed causing breakouts and other reactions.

When Do I Need to Toss My Brushes?

It is time to toss your Mary Kay brushes when the bristles start to shed or delay. This cannot be emphasized enough that having the right tools are just as critical as having the right Mary Kay product.
